    Hi everyone,

I am trying to figure out a chord progression I really love, but I am having trouble doing it by ear.

It is the intro from this video:

    • The chord by Jean-Paul Brodbeck starts at 0:10
    • Kurt Rosenwinkels intro begins at 0:30

I would really appreciate any help in identifying the chords being played. I am especially curious about the harmonic structure and any interesting voicings you might notice.

    Thanks in advance!

Something like D/A and C#/A which is a voicing of A augmented? Does that seem right?
Just a lame guess from somebody still struggling with cowboy chords...

Really nice working of a great Brahms piano piece. Very cool!

I’m hearing the same as JBN

That C#/A or Amaj7#5 is rather Brahmsian…. It’s sort of borrowed from the relative minor and adds that bittersweet tinge.

(Although in the minor key the maj7#5 chord has its roots in French Baroque music.)

In jazz it’s often called the ‘Girlfriend chord’ apparently haha

The piece it's a reimagining of, op118 is, in my opinion, a love song Johannes Brahms wrote through his long time love for Clara Shumann. One of the great love stories of all time.

Also - can we just pause and note how insane at drums Jorge is? My god that groove.

    Cool!

I don’t actually know Brahm’s piano music very well.

Clara was also a fantastic composer in her own right.

More info about that chord for the nerdy

Also IV III I all major is a hip way to play a II v I. With that bass you get Bm7 E13b9 A

Many thanks! I checked with a friend who asked his jazz teacher, and he explained the chord progression Kurt plays starting around 0:30 as follows:

    First chord (a triad)
    e|--9--
    B|--10-
    G|--9--

    Second chord (e triad)
    e|--7--
    B|--9-
    G|--9--

Third chord (d major (no 5th))
    e|--7--
    B|--7-
    G|--10--

    Fourth chord: (Eadd11)
    e|--17--
    B|--17--
    G|--13-
    D|--16-

    Does this make sense?

I think you meant to write

    e: 10
    B: 7
    G: 7

    For the third chord?

I'm gonna need to go down a rabbit hole with this one but I think Kurt is being quite faithful with the original right hand piano part here. I don't think he's adding anything to it, at a cursory listen.

I suspect he's probably played this one at the piano at some point too.

Isn't it nuts how everything Kurt plays ends up sounding like Kurt? Almost like he's super talented or something.
