Jazz in/near Birmingham Alabama

I'll be near Birmingham for a family trip this summer. Any venues or artists I should try to see while I'm down there?

I don’t know Bham that well, but here is what I am aware of from visiting a buddy who lives there. Avondale brewery has a small club upstairs and a big lawn-like outdoor venue, took the wife to see a great Jon Batiste show there recently. Honestly, I’d be surprised if you find much real jazz in town, although some bigger names (e.g. Frisell, Metheny) come through occasionally. Go check out Highland Music, they have lots of great vintage gear, and the proprietor keeps close tabs on who is playing where. Right downtown near UAB.

There are like 5-10 venues that come up when I search jazz on Google maps. Comparing it to where I live, that’s a jazz utopia.

I’ll reach out to that music store. Hopefully they know who a local jazz guitarist I can check out.
