A Fender Champion 40 is for sale on the local marketplace for not very much money.

What I am looking for is something about as loud as a Deluxe but clean (I occasionally play in a big band where my 15-watt Traynor tube amp is just about sufficient). A little lighter wouldn’t hurt.

Or, there seem to be a lot of Vox SS amps for not very much. And advice, suggestions, warnings about those?

I use a Katana MKII 50 with big band. I tweaked its tone and character with the internal EQ's and find it has plenty of power, I use the 25 watt setting most of the time. 25 lbs.

I have a Champion 20, and I'd say it's not quite enough amp for a big band, but the 40 probably is and is cheap enough to be worth a shot [I tried one in a store, but that didn't give me a sense of how loud it really is]. The DV Mark Little Jazz is worth checking out as well, if your budget allows for $300-ish.

    I’d agree with that ….

My recent experience is that my Little Jazz wasn't quite loud enough for a big band. I was able to manage with a Henriksen Blu with the volume all the way up, but I didn't want to do that again.

My JC55 is loud enough with volume to spare.

I played trombone in big bands where guitarists played 15-watters. Blues Jrs, Princetons, XDs. Whether it works or not depends a lot on the piano and whether he’ll give you any space.

The Champion is a great choice. They're 19 lbs and loud enough with good sounds for almost anything short of heavy metal.

Fender Rumble 40 is also a good option if you only need clean tones.

I have a Rumble 100. Despite being somewhat large, it is LIGHT. And loud.

I don’t play my guitars through it much—got it for a bass (surprisingly), but no reason it wouldn’t work, with a reverb pedal.
