    Dear all,

I am so proud and it finally worked out: This weekend I finally took home my very own Gibson Pat Martino Custom.

After having searched for that guitar for the better part of eight years now (including several that came up in times when I did not have the funds to go after them) I can now say: It plays like butter and already feels like the ideal, more electric addition to my Elferink and Ibanez GB100 arch tops.

I did not yet have time to record sound samples in the middle of promoting my current duo CD and everything, but I took a couple of snapshots!

I especially liked the darker, brown color.

Did I mention that the action and playability of this beauty right now feels like way beyond everything I ever experienced. Anyhow, let's wait until I have had this for some time .

Have a nice day, gotta go play again!

Wow, that's a hip axe - looks like a keeper. The kind of guitar where you get a little thrill everytime you open the case. Congrats

The Pat Martino Custom is one of the most rare if not the rarest Gibson I know of. There has been a metallic blue one on Ebay on and off for a long time but for some reason it hasn't sold as far as I know.

Your description does it justice, mine sounds somewhere between a Les Paul and 335. I like the rear body contour and not slim neck without position markers. I've seen so few yours is only the third I know of. So far that makes three color variations. Here's mine:

    Hey all!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Indeed, I think that she's a keeper. Whenever I get her out of the case, I can't help that grin on my face. Ah well... in any case, this guitar takes me into new sonic territory, so I am happy.

@GNAPPI: Yeah, they appear to be rare. I had also been staring at that metallic one on Ebay but the fact that it kept popping up scared me off a bit. There is also a natural one that regularly shows up, but strangely has the Gibson Custom logo on the front of the headstock (which all the others don't seem to).
Yours is indeed also my third one I have seen. The other one was a lighter caramel brown.

It was a long way there though. Swapped my Les Paul for a Gibson ES-446 a couple of months ago, because it was kinda similar to the Martino shape-wise. Then I wanted to sell off the 446 for the Martino - didn't work as I planned. Now I have sold my digital effects rig that was too complicated for my needs and ended up with both the 446 and the Martino. They do pair nicely, but I guess that I'll be moving the 446 soon to make room for a nice steel-string or something. I guess this never stops, does it?

    All the best,
    Sebastian

Congratulations. I am glad you found your Pat Martino Custom after a period of searching for it. It is a rare bird and one of acquired taste but if it fits your style, then you have found your axe. Did you find it locally or was it imported from the USA?

It looks like a semi-hollow version of the solid-body L-5S, with a Florentine cutaway, that Pat Martino played in the 70s to me. I like the straight-string-pull-through headstock which is not like the usual Gibson open-book headstock. And the unadorned ebony fretboard. Nice.

Post some clips of it when you get the chance.

What is the lower bout width? 14"? 15"? In the past I haven't been able to find out. Thanks.

While the single cut away harks to the old Gibsons I believe it's construction is like the 336s. Couldn't afford it, there was one in Rudy's in NY for a while. I have a 137 Custom but always pine for the one that got away.

Thanx! Tried it at home, at a masterclass and at a session so far. I actually have to get used to not having to work so hard to get good tone, it is a nice feeling tho. About the recording - i have some time tomorrow, so I'll see what I can come up with.

my Pat Martino actually showed up kinda locally, as a friend of mine happened to sell it.

I have never played an L5S, but after your recommendations (thx again) , I checked some pictures and everything online. it really looks like the Martino is a hollowbody variation of that guitar.

But right now, I don't see any need to go after the Benedetto version. This quest was actually not about the mastet himself, it was just about that beautiful guitar!

yes, its similar to a Benny, or at least the one with F-holes. The Benny has a 25" scale length like a Johnny Smith as opposed to the 24.75", that Gibson favors so much.

The Gibson L5S had a 25.5 inch scale length if I'm not mistaken. Different animal. Martino played one for a while. So did John Williams believe it or not.

Interesting. Didn't know that. :-) I do like the scale length as it is actually. Goes well with the overall nice and easy feel.

My guess is that it was Pat's request.

Hey there! Well, we are doing very fine indeed. I actually love the absence of the position markers A LOT. I don't even know why, but that somehow resonates with me. Soundwise, I don't have any objections so far and I am discovering new ways to go on that guitar every day that seem so easy compared to my other instruments.

One minor thing: This guitar also feels like a Les Paul in terms of weight. But yeah, with a good strap and good posture that does not put me off at all.

Definitely cured my G.A.S. for any semi-hollow type of guitar for now (and hopefully a long time to come). :-)

Thanks for that information there. I was not even aware of that being quite so common!
