Hi. I recently purchased an Eastman AR 371. I love the guitar but I'm worried about dropping it as the strap sometimes pops off. Is it safe to have strap locks installed on a hollow body guitar? I've had them on solid bodies and semis, but I don't want to do any structural damage. I would have the work done professionally- not by me. Thanks!

Strap locks won't damage your instrument. The only thing you're changing is the strap button; the locking mechanism will be attached to the strap itself without making contact with your instrument.

I've never had a strap malfunction with a hellow body -- too light, I guess.
But some guys do belt and suspenders.

I use strap locks on my peerless monarch - & have had no problems with them

You could of course also do the old rubber-ring trick if you happen to empty two suitable bottles of beer!
No changes needed to the guitar itself and works like a charm.

Thanks for replying. Did you keep the strap buttons where they were or did you need to relocate them? I'm mainly concerned with the neck one. It's popped off a few times.
-
Zireneus, what is the "old rubber ring trick"?
-
Try bass string trees for strap buttons. You'll have to unscrew them to put on the strap, but once it's on it's not going anywhere.

you can get the grolsch rings from hardware stores or brewery supply stores online, but that isn't as fun. they make plain black ones, too, but the red somehow works. i switched from straplocks to beer washers/grommet things years ago without modification or incident on all guitars, not just hollowbodies. just make sure your strap is properly seated and you'll be fine. secret to that is a strap that has good strong tabs that won't stretch over time, not the cheesy pleather/bonded leather/genuine rat ass straps you tend to find nowadays.

No problems with hollow bodies. It's a simple DIY install.
-
Or just get something like a neotech guitar strap which will provide a bit more security using your current strap buttons.

I installed the Gretsch-type Straplocks. Kinda like how they work and also how they look like!
-
Why go to the expense of straplocks! I just use leather washers- more or less the same thing as Zirenius says with Grolsch bottle stops.

This is your way forward:-

Work like a charm for most guitars, but beware the combination of thick straps and small strap buttons........

Thanks, MangoTango. I had a set of these but have lost one. I just found a bag of the Grolsch beer retainers on Ebay.
Not as much fun as drinking but quicker. Thanks again for your responses.

I second the plastic Dunlop strap locks- easy to use and nothing to change on the guitar

I have one of these on nearly all of my wall hung guitars Auto Lock Locking Guitar Straps | Guitar & Bass | D'Addario
Unfortunately the heel button would need to be side mounted not on the cap as they only go on one way (the protective rubber is only on one side - quite a design oversight).
Note only the Nylon version feels like a premium product.

+1 more on the Grolsch beer solution.

You can also buy rubber strap locks, if you do not want to buy a beer. I have used the ones I bought at GC in a number of guitars. The only thing to watch for, is that strap locks that function in that way can slowly unscrew the strap button. I had a number of different strap locks do that. I formed a habit of when I first pick up a guitar with strap locks, I check and see if the strap button is becoming loosened. Typically I have to tune a guitar at least once a day anyway.
With rubber strap locks, the thickness of the strap can be an issue. Also if the strap button is small, that can be an issue. Easy enough to replace the strap button. (I tend to use Coolstraps. They are very well made, super comfortable, and have some great designs. Also I have had great conversations with Terri and I have been treated excellently. Here is a link to her reverb store: Coolstraps Custom Handmade Guitar Straps | Reverb )
One last thing: if your strap button has worn down the hole, there is an easy fix. Toothpick (cut to size), and Elmers glue. After it has fully set, re drill an hole. Then screw the button back in.

I just make sure that strap locks or belts etc. have nothing metal on them, because otherwise, sooner or later they are going to damage the guitar! So for my archtops and acoustics it's all leather belts, and i use the beer rubber thing (i have dozens of them
) in the rare cases i stand up with these guitars. I use the same thing on electrics and i have never had it fail in decades..
