I have a Redneck ODS50 Dumble Clone which puts out pure Robben Ford and just about anything else you could want, cleans to die for.
Anyone else into the Dumble thing?

I've got a Fuchs ODS that I like a lot. It used to be a silverface Bassman, but I sent it to Andy Fuchs for modification. It's great for jazz in as much as with the overdrive off, it's got plenty of headroom. With the OD on, it's a fusion monster.

How does the Dumble clean tone compare to the Fender?

  8. #7

the dumble clean is middy. Not necessarily in a bad way but the fender tone is brighter and looser. The dumble clean is very tight. I like it for jazz and for pop music

HAD has always been weird about who he builds for. He will not build for you if you do not prove that you're a great player to him. He usually requires a CD

Single channel Tube amps without reverb are not that difficult to build, many Kits are available, build your own and tweak it to your own requirements, but the 550volts is deadly.

the dumble amps that we're talking about are a bit more complicated than a tweed, single channel amp.

That is one way to build a myth about oneself. If that were true, how come he made amps for this guy? It can't be for the money. You know the one(s):

I could forgive the playing if the player didn't look so goofy.

I've built an amp from a Ceriatone Blackace board about 10 years ago, they were very inexpensive at the time, I don't know Dumble amps, but apart from the tone stack this OverTone Special board is very similar to a Fender.

it's got the whole relay/channel switching and cascading gain stages going on too. It makes for a way more complicated layout than a tweed fender.

I did say I don't know Dumble amps, but is that a Field effect transistor (FET) after the input jack, I wonder what that does. Still it's not too difficult for a DIY build.

Here's a step by step Ceriatone Dumble build on Youtube, built by a competent Englishman.

There's more on his youtube site.

You either get what Kaiser does or you don't  It's definitely not for everyone...

Loved the Kaiser clip. There's an amp in that signal chain?

That's really cool, Guy! If I hadn't given up on tubes, I'd probably build one. I've done some amp repair work in the past. Nowadays, I'm more interested in playing in my spare time rather than building/modding and messing with microphonic tubes.

i kinda like what is theoretically possible with the cleans (the ethos cleans for jazz, to name one) but every example i've heard, clean or (especially) otherwise is straight up blues dad. or henry kaiser. simply cannot abide. i keep reading its the holy grail and people keep charging holy grail prices for them (and clones) and i keep not hearing holy grail. lucky for me, i guess. i can't afford to be a convert.

what is straight up blues dad?!? The clean channel of the ethos can't even generate overdrive. It doesn't have enough gain.

I have a tube dumble preamp and the ethos and they sound nearly identical

"Middy" sounds like the quality most associated with jazz guitar tone, and the amp that most exemplifies the term "middy" IMO is the Polytone.

Perhaps the reason I've never really thought of the Dumble as a clean tone machine is that most users tend to exploit and highlight its overdriven qualities.

Straight-up blues dad : Generic pentatonic riffs played by a white guy who looks like someone's father. And they are almost predominantly white guys.
