There's one for sale locally and like all high end Eastmans, it's perfectly done. The price is right ($1200) BUT there's one issue.
The strings are flats and must be THE heaviest flats I've ever seen, which is likely causing the neck to have a SEVERE bow in it.
I'm pretty sure the PO put the strings on and had no clue about adjusting the truss rod, and traded it because of the neck problem.
My problem... It's been like this for quite a while and I'm concerned that.
1. The neck could be permanently bowed.
2. The rod adjuster could be broke
3. The dealer will let me adjust it but if it breaks while I am adjusting it, there's a problem with responsibility.
So should I attempt to re-string and adjust it? If it broke and I had to pay for it what would be the likelihood Eastman can fix it?

I wonder what would happen if you just tuned the strings down a third and then just let it sit with no adjustments for a few days?
-
Why won't the dealer adjust the truss rod? He's the one selling an archtop with an issue. I can't imagine a dealer taking an archtop in trade, or buying outright that wouldn't take steps to discover any and all issues of an archtop before listing it for sale. I don't buy from dealers, but isn't that the norm?

Gnappi
Just tell him you won't buy the guitar unless he gets the neck straight. You sound too anxious to buy and maybe he can sense this?
-
Agreed w/ above post! There are always many fish in the sea, especially in the down economy.
-
How about just restringing it without tightening the rod and seeing what happens for a few days.

Hi Gary,
I bought an Eastman AR910Ce (used ) last year, from a reputable dealer here in the UK
it sounded awful strung with heavy Flatwounds ( i use mostly D'addario 11-48 s ) but i
immediately restrung it with Roundwound light gauge strings. let it settle down for a day
or two & it nows sounds and plays really well the floating pick up is quite powerful,Even
though its a large guitar for me I like it. ( friends are horrified that I bought a Chinese
made guitar.) but it is a good quality instrument.
May I suggest you follow the advice of other contributors here, I would hope the promlem
can be easily resolved.
Good luck

The neck issue could be address by a qualified tech. Letting off the string tension and replacing with a lighter gauge will probably help but may not completely cure the problem. Even with the truss rod adjustment it might not be enough. Truss rods are really only to counter the pull of the strings not a cure for a warp. Sometimes the wood can take a set that is only reversed with heat and reverse tension. And it's usually a costly repair and isn't always 100% effective. I've seen a couple that didn't work for very long. The wood had a memory and went back to the warped state....This is worse case scenario, of course, but something to be aware of when considering purchasing a damaged instrument.
If you are looking for this particular model Elderly Instruments has one for sale. http://elderly.com/vintage/items/45U-1604.htm
On the surface it appears more costly ($2100.00) than the one you are looking at but factoring in the likely cost of repairs to the first one I think it's a good price. It's already been serviced by their tech so should be in top playing condition. There is one small properly repaired crack in the lower side. I was thinking about it a few weeks back so I emailed them and asked about that crack. They sent some photos and their assurance that it was properly repaired and supported. Besides it's not in a vital area so not something I'd personally be concerned with.
Considering it has that damage you might see if they will give you a break, cover the shipping maybe...I don't know, just a suggestion, cannot hurt to ask.
Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with Elderly except as an occasional customer; I have nothing to do with the Eastman 910CE they are selling except it was something I was looking at before I found my Peerless at the "House of 2bornot2bop" and I just remembered it when I saw your post.
Good luck with your search.

GNAPPI I have a 2011 AR910CE and it is a wonderful guitar, I highly recommend it. I have TI 13s on mine, this winter has been cold with the heat running continually, extremely low humidity and the neck has moved very little compared to some of my other guitars.
The price of $1,200 is very low, if everything was in good "workman like" shape I would think it would go for $1,600 - $2,400. Do you know the year?

I've read the whole thread, and after taking a bit of a breather myself, I think my suggestion is to find another guitar. I was thinking of all the really cool but messed up cars I used to buy. I alway thought "wow, this is such a cool car for the money". If I just fix up the thingamabob, it will be a steal. The thingamabob would then blow up before I got it fixed and I'd be off looking for another cool car. This continued unit I bought a Honda Civic. It was boring and a bit expensive but it worked. There are lots of guitars in good shape for reasonable prices so why buy one with a known problem?

Having previously owned one, I passed, but it was a decent buy on a 910.
In January, a mint 910 sold for $1800. That's as high as used 910's from private sellers go. Over that is nuts, imho, unless you don't mind being buried in it.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments , the guitar seems to be extraordinarily
inexpensive, the price in the Uk would be in the region of $2600 or thereabouts the
Sterling equivalent approximately £1600. I'm very happy with mine also, most players
are unable to afford high end Archtops in the $9000 and upwards range. I would approach
this prospective purchase with extreme caution, and suggest the buyer listens carefully to
the very sensible advice already given on this thread by other contributors.
kind regards

Don't buy it.

Just a side thought! When I bought my Eastman 810CE from a local dealer he also had a great deal on a 910CE as well. I probably could have goten that one for $100-200 more, but I played them for awhile. And it w/ my eyes closed it was no contest at all, the 810CE even though plainer spoke to me. Don't always buy buy the outside packaging!

It seems odd to me that even .014 flat wounds could warp a multi-piece neck with a truss rod running through it. Thought these were supposed to be the epitome of stable.

Totally agree with those that advise finding an instrument elsewhere.. just wish we could get a condition report from a tech. Real pity if the neck is warped.
-
Low price, bowed neck, take a Pass and live to spend your money another day!
-
there are lots of Eastmen out there, wait and buy one that has a proper neck.
OR, make a lowball offer on this one given the present condition and take a small risk.
I remember going into a pawn shop as a kid and finding two matching ovation guitars (this was before i discovered i am quite "allergic" to V-shaped neck profiles, lol). One was erroneously set up with nylon strings and filthy, the other pristine. I paid 1/3rd the price of the clean instrument, took it home, cleaned it and strung it to find it was great.
