Hey,
Can someone list a few budget models (Epiphone, Ibanez etc.) who resemble the gibson L5 (generous hollow bodies, two humbuckers, 20 frets and a venetian cutaway)?

Ibanez SJ500VLS. Made in China of solid pressed spruce and curly maple with maple binding and an ebony fretboard. Sleeper guitar. Ibanez Artcore Sj500Vls Hollow Body Electric Guitar in Violin Sunbu...
It has a nitrocellulose finish, I suspect, because mine has that "sticky" feel to it and checked in one or two places. It looks like nitro. It has a woody thunk to the tone, both plugged in and played acoustically. The Super 58 pups are decent.
Also, Epiphone Broadway Elite/Elitist.Last edited by Jabberwocky; 10-07-2014 at 02:00 PM.

L5 style = 17" lower bout, 25,5" scale, carved spruce top. That somewhat limits the variety. But I am not sure if that is what the OP meant.

Gretsch 6040MCSS (Synchromatic 400)
Solid pressed top with a single filtertron. Unfortunatly they didni't come with twin pickups. These are out of production I think, but you could pickup up a used one for not a whole lot of money. The filtertrons tend to have less mids and clearer highs, which would complement an archtop. I suspect with the tone control rolled back some it would be possible to get a fairly close sound to a regular humbucker.
I have a G400 (Similar to the above, but non cutaway acoustic, sunburst) and it's superb. Despite having a pressed solid top instead of carved it has a very loud rich acoustic sound. I have used it acoustically at gigs with no problems being heard. I've played guitars that have been 2 to 3 times the price that really didn't impress me as much as the Gretsch.

Epiphone has an es175 (closer to the L4, but pretty reasonable. Also the Broadway, or the Joe Pass

The Jay Turser JT-155 is very low-priced. Not sure if it's still being made:
