Just have a look at Joe's guitar collection :
Joe Bonamassa - Joe Bonamassa Guitar

Amazing ! Not only LP or solid bodies to play the blues but also a lot of fine jazz guitars to die for !

I just found this as I was looking for tour dates : he will play at less than one hour drive from my home, and I'll be there (even if he doesn't play all these guitars ....)

well . . . . so much for all the talk about "guys (and gals) with many guitars are just hedge fund managers, doctors and lawyers who really don't know how to play them". :-)

It's good to see that apparently it's possible also in other music genres than R&B or rap to make a decent enough living to buy a collection like that. Must have costed a fortune.

And now we know were all the guitars and amps go. To people who apparently don't want anyone else to have them.

Im all for collecting but when your collection is this big, it's borderline distasteful and a discredit to other musicians.

Unless he uses all of them on a semi regular basis. Obviously not singling him out, there are much worse examples than this.

I wonder what the intent of the photo was. It was obviously staged. Kind of a strange picture. Not sure what it says about Joe?

This from a guy who shows 5 guitars in his avatar. lololol How horrible of you to have 5 guitars (or more??) . . when you really only need one to make music. You are depriving at least four other people from having a guitar . . by your own way of thinking. You . . . "apparently don't want anyone else to have them".

Are you genuinely concerned that the rest of the guitar playing world will be deprived due to guys that can afford to have many MANY guitars and amps, choose to do so? Or, is there a twinge of envy (jealousy) in your sentiment? Would you like him to "spread the wealth around"? Why not just give the guitars and amps to those who can't afford them because they haven't worked as hard at being successful as Joe has?

"Borderline distasteful" for a man of means to have multiples of "stuff" he loves? That's just terribly judgemental. What right do you claim to have to be judgemental of Joe ("not singling him out") Banamassa?

"I'm all for collecting . . . " Yeah . . . right!! As long as one's collection doesn't exceed what you believe to be appropriate limitations. What Joe has here is a mere pittance, compared to what others have . . and had. Clapton too had "a few" guitars. They were, as you know, sold off for a charitable reason. I guess he too was borderline disgraceful?

Personally, I hope Joe doubles his collection . . if he choose to do so. Joe's guitars will eventually find their way back into the market . . and in the hands of other players, collectors or player/collectors, or collector/players. All collections do. Between Tsumura and Chinery, they had collections of well over 2,000 stringed instruments. Just think of all the people they deprived, by your assessment. Yet, those guitars have now found their way into the hands of others, players and collectors alike. Mick Mars, Keith Richards, Slash, George Benson, Yngwei Malmsteen (now there's a guy who has "deprived" quite a few people from owning olympic white strats), Lenny Kravitz, Richard Gere, Rick Neilsen.

    Here's a guy who should definitely be sent directly to Myanmar for 1,000 lashes with bamboo;

Perhaps governments of all countries should impose limits on how many of any given item its citizens are allowed to own?

Clearly, the intent was to show off his impressive collection . . of which he is extremely proud. Not at all a strange picture, IMO. What it says about Joe, is that he loves owning guitars and has achieved enough success and amassed enough wealth to own many.

Many here take great pride in doing exactly the same thing . . albeit with fewer guitars.

No not envy at all. For a start most of his collection I wouldn't use if you gave it to me. Les pauls, Gretcsh etc. Also 99% of his amps would be useless to me too.
Secondly I sell my guitars pretty quick and actually I contribute to the guitar playing publicly providing first rate guitars.

I do put collections together for photos and for the passion but I would never build a vast collection i couldn't even play. Thats greed.

I think the picture's really weird. All those cool guitars, and he poses holding a Flying V?

There's a lot to admire about this guy besides his amazing collection of guitars. He truly loves music and tours relentlessly. He plays music that is not on the pop charts, yet manages to sell lots of CDs and play large arenas. He does his booking, promotion and recordings "in house" and retains control of everything. And, of course, is an extremely skilled guitarist.

Not really a fan of his style of music, though I'm sure he puts on a great live show.

If we're going to gush and admire the guy let's at least spell Bonamassa correctly.

Are Flying Vs not cool guitars too? As a collector, it's quite possible that the V has a special or a personal special meaning to him . . or provenance. Maybe it was given to him or his dad by Lonnie Mack . . maybe Albert King. Maybe Dave Davies was his child hood hero. For a photo shoot such as this, the collector is most likely to want to be photographed holding something that is very special to him, for one reason or another.

No. Flying V's are always stupid.

OOPS!! I mis-spelled Joe's name. Please forgive me.

I'm not gushing at all here Brian. It always has . . and always will totally piss me off when people choose to express their pompous, self righteous opinions on guitar collectors as being greedy or having no concern for others . . . and stating that they shouldn't own more guitars than they intend to play regularly . . or if they have many many guitars, they can't play worth a shit. Ya know what? I never, ever, ever hear collectors dis'ing very serious and talented players, who might be playing very inexpensive or totally unimportant guitars because it's all they can afford to own. So, who's got the class out of those two groups? Is it the envious and jealous people such as ArchtopHeaven and others? Or, is it the collector who gets just as much enjoyment listening to guys like Joe Pass, who played and recorded with inexpensive guitars all of his life . . unless they were guitars owned by others?

While I'm not gushing, as you suggested . . I do admire the guy . . tremendously. Like you, I'm not at all a big fan. But, I wouldn't walk out of a concert . . and I doubt you would either.

Yeah sorry. I wasn't referring to you as the gusher.

And to be totally honest I did walk out at an outdoor festival. Good player, has put his career together well, but music has to affect me either viscerally or intellectually or preferably both. And his music does neither.

I never said you were jealous of what he has. I said . . and I still believe, that you and others like you who make the kinds of statements you do, are jealous of how much . . or how many guitars and amps some collectors have. Would you feel less offended if Joe had 100 of your beloved Japanese built guitars . . instead of what he's showing here?

Secondly I sell my guitars pretty quick and actually I contribute to the guitar playing publicly providing first rate guitars.
Ok . . so then now you're presuming to be aware of how long Joe has owned, or will own those guitars in his collection. You're also presuming to be aware of what Joe is . . or isn't contributing to the guitar playing community. Nice . . .

I do put collections together for photos and for the passion but I would never build a vast collection i couldn't even play. Thats greed.
So, you do put collections together for photos and for passion . . and that's OK. I guess it would also be OK if Joe, and others, put together for reasons you endorse and in quantities you deem appropriate? You're doing what you're doing . . and owning more guitars than you really need to own, out of . . passion?? Are you using "passion" as a synonym to greed?? Because . . that's how I'm hearing you use it.

The hole you're digging yourself into is getting deeper. Put the shovel down!
