Informal poll. What are your preferred Flatwound gauges? I've always found standard set guages too large on the bottom A and E strings...especially the low E string. I recently found and purchased a 2013 Ibanez AFJ91 (with control knobs on the body, not the pickguard). I have found these gauges more playable than the usual standard set D'Addario's. I've looked online to try to find the gauges that ship from the factory with this guitar, but no luck. Anyone know?

Don't know what Ibanez fit at the factory.

Standard gauge is 12-52, the only company I know that offer different gauges in a packaged set are Thomastik Swing flats. They are 12-16-20-27-37-50, so lighter in the basses.

    My AFJ91 came with 11's (D'Addario flats, I believe). I changed the the high E and B to 12 and 16.

I don't know what they fit now but they used to fit D'Addario 11's, I had several Ibanez guitars that came with that guage

    TI swing 12 25.5 scale.

These strings have low tension and the action can be set lower than rounds, so I can go with 13s or 14s. But the 12s get the job done.

Whoah -- are you saying the T-I Swings come in a 14? I know the George Bensons and Bebops do, but are you sure about the Swings? I'd be moving on up if they did.

Now that I think of it, the 14s I tried were labella tape wounds ... also very low tension.

thomastik swing (flats) .012 or .013

12's are great even on a 335, even with overdrive

That's NOT what's indicated. For a dozen or more it says € 15,65, which amounts to $ 16.57.

    My recent AFJ95 came with D'addario flatwounds .011 - .050 (measured). I like that gauge a lot.

In flats, TI Swings 12-52. I tried the 13's, but found just that little bit more difficulty in bending. !2's are comfortable for me. I'm sure that I could get used to the heavier gauges, but the slightly improved tone doesn't compensate for the reduced playability.

I like the 12's, yes. I don't bend any, so the 13's work well for me. I've even "toyed" with the idea of trying the Benson '14's. Can anyone provide their "take" on the Swing '13's vs the Benson '14's?

I use D'Addario 12-52. It works for me at the moment. I did try 13's since that's what I use on my acoustic guitars in bluegrass and I want them to be as loud as possible, but I prefer 12's on the jazzbox for a smoother feel.

Same here but I substitute a flat wound 18 for the b string.

Wow! Mention that on the Telecaster forum and they will go insane.

Any concerns with intonation or volume balance?
