I have never heard of ES-195 but it sounded very jazzy.

I think that sounds just great.

It's an ES-175 with thinner body, Trini headstock/inlays, P-94 pickups (P-90s fit into a conventional humbucking mount) and Bigsby. These were listed new on a few sites for as little as $1995. Screamingly good deal , IMO. I was going to chase one until I confirmed the not-huge neck size.

these can be had in the 2kish range these days, apparently. wonder what the used price would be. always sort of curious, but i've heard anyone accuse the p94s of being good pickups. the bridge sounded alright in that demo but the neck was kinda bland for me. its common to replace them, with filters or pafs, it seems.

maybe if i saw one cheap enough i'd give them a shot. i think the aesthetics sort of work, but i'm not super on board with the diamonds. i'd like to see a tort guard on either one, too, maybe a chet handle.

    A direct comparison against ES-175

I know it's not rational, but that headstock is a deal-breaker for me....

Ironically this is the closest you will get to the modded Es-175 Joe Pass played and was never released. You know the slimmed down ES-175

Played one at the local music store, didn't really like it at all. It felt somewhat flimsy, poorly set up and finished, and the sound was too tinny for my taste

Well thats quite a good review for a $2000 Gibson lol

I'm surprised at that price they felt you needed to have a neck with it.

    How is this ironic?

Because it seems silly that they didn't just make the Joe Pass one, which of course they never did. That guitar would sell incredibly well. Instead they made this with essentially the joe pass body, made it for rockerbilly players and no one buys it.

    Isn't that Ironic?

No, it isn't (unless you're Alanis Morisette).

Irony usually has a sense of humour attached to it, hence why I feel it is ironic.

Its certainly not a coincidence is it? Which is Alanis's problem.

Irony is a situation in which the surface meaning is different from the underlying meaning or where an outcome is the opposite of the intent, often involving elements such as humor or comeuppance. Gibson marketing a guitar that doesn't sell to its target audience, in contrast to a hypothetical model having hypothetical sales success to a different hypothetical target audience isn't irony. If they had called it the Joe Pass special, and only people who used wah-wah pedals and fuzz boxes bought it, that would be ironic. The Fender Jazzmaster is ironic.

I like the big Hofner guitar in the background.

I dont know, you kinda lost me when you said I was making the same mistake as Alanis, which clearly wasn't the case.

I think there is enough leeway in the use of the word ironic, for this to be considered an irony.

I dont think the Jazzmaster is irony, its just plain stupidity and ignorance, surely? I mean it wasn't even designed like a jazz guar. If it was a more traditional Jazz guitar design and then became popular with rock guys and not jazzers, i would agree, that would be ironic but thats not what happened. They made a blues guitar and stupidly thought that would do as a jazz box. Probably for the main reason that it would be above Fender's pay grade to step outside of their cheap, crude lego guitars but yet they wanted to break into the jazz market, which they didn't do because they didn't make a jazz guitar in the first place.

Mate, bashing Gibson and Fender in one thread, Lol.

Lego indeed! Aren't common haulage boxes made from plywood? Lol.

You are a star(caster) [or should that be ExtraSpecial335?]

I had me Jazzmaster out for a spin today and 'Yes', it don't do jazz or rock or blues with any finesse.

Coz of its tonal and body colour it is now known as the....

    Vanillamaster

I can't comment on the ES195, never played one. I played a 2012 ES175 and a 2012 Peerless Gigmaster back to back and I thought the Peerless was a better guitar!

    Thread resurrection:

I went back today to hand in my resume and gave the ES-195 another shot. This time it was set up with flat wounds. Love it. If it did not have the Bigsby, I would be all over it!

Removing a Bigsby B6 and replacing it with a conventional archtop tailpiece is literally child's play.
ES-175 replacement tailpieces are widely available and inexpensive.

I think if I wanted something like that I would go with an Epiphone Sorrento where I wouldnt have the freaky headstock, smaller pickup routes for a real P90 and a pay a little over 1/3 the price of the Gibson.. (or a mid 60s that are going for about 2k depending on condition)

But.. as mentioned before.. neck profile can be a deal breaker

Yes you are right, unless you (like me) do not want to hack and attack drilling holes that make the Bigsby impossible to put back on without leaving evidence of your "signature" mod.

Anyway, this has me looking for a TP with a base large enough to put holes in the same location.
