    Hi,

I have a Super champ XD that I really like.

At the moment there is a Jenson P10R installed.

Somehow something is still missing in the tone for my ears. Preferably i would love to play with Chanel 1, but it sounds to thin, to much treble..

So I thought about another speaker. with more warm but not boomy bass und less treble.

Could someone recommend a 10" Speaker for Jazz in general?

    Greetings from Bavaria

"Jazz in General" is a very wide description - and in addition personal taste varies all over the place. So you'll likely get answers reflecting that - all over the place. That said, some like the Eminence Lil' Buddy (10" version of the 12" Cannabis Rex). I put one in a 1980s Cube 40 and it tamed the somewhat shrill trebles. Be sure to check if the speaker can handle the output of the amp before buying.

Before you replace the speaker, just try setting bass and treble on 0 and voice on 4 or 15.

Guitar volume near all the way up, and guitar tone rolled off to taste.

This should reduce the midrange "scoop" you're hearing.

    thanks oldane

you are right. Soundwise i would prefer a Wes Montgomery Sound.

    @boatheelmusic

    I will try your recommendation.

I play a Super Champ X2 head, always on Channel 1, through a 12" Eminence Cannabis Rex cab. Its never shrill and I love the tone I get. As Oldane suggests, the Lil Buddy would be the 10" equivalent.

I did exactly the same as Oldane, a Lil Buddy 10" Eminnence, into my Roland Cube 40W (1979), the original Roland speaker with Alu Dust cap actually was ok, but the Lil Buddy is very warm, great speaker. Good bottom bass, not bright top,

Warm warm sound, even from my SS amp.

The Fender will be a good match. No bass boom, great mid range good top end without being harsh/shrill.

I use play two high end archtops and Tele Deluxe with wide range pups.

I have Super Champ XD as a rehearsal amp for my rock band and I like it a lot. Even with the stock speaker. But for jazz it might be a different story.

There is a vid somewhere in the net where a guy praises his XD w/ Celestion Gold 10" for every genre and jazz too. He is some kinda studio pro so maybe he knows something.

I had some time a Tone Tubby Red Alnico in it. Very pleasant.

Many replace the stock speaker with Eminence Ragin Cajun to make it louder. I found it too harsh and middle spiked.

I have WGS G12C/S in my Princeton and I like it a lot. Maybe its 10" equivalent would work.

It is a modeling amp in the Channel 2 and thats why the stock speaker is a bit to "all round" direction. The modelings can "sound wrong" with a more emphasizing speaker.

    Good luck!

Uups! It was a vid from the Celestion! Not so objective!

    But here it is:

celestion gold 10 is a great speaker..pricey but good...vintage style alnico mag, extremely efficient, capable of handling some good power and having a very transparent hi-fi tone...doesn't have big booming bass tone that ferrite mag speakers have, but rather has an even deeper, but even tone...clear mids and a nice chimey top end..tho in no way piercing...

i'd say its a very true to the guitar & amp speaker...allows you to dial in your tone rather than it dictating what your tone is going to be

    looks cool too!!!..my fave 10"

it'll put you in mind of the old classic alnico's of the past..the jbl's, the ev's, the altecs..classic

    cheers

I had a Superchamp XD. A very nice amp!
I liked the Rajun Cajun in it a lot.
I found the Little Buddy too muddy.

I now have a PRRI with Celestion Gold. Sounds just great.
For now I am done fiddling with tube amp / speaker configurations.

i'd think the prri (i prefer the 68 to the 65) with alnico gold 10 be a perfect little jazzer..the efficiency of the speaker would counteract the low wattage, and power handling capability would keep it clean and balanced..perfect combo

    cheers

Which 10" Eminence Speaker for Jazz ?

Fender SCXD is my main amp for all styles, including big band. What a suprisingly loud and phenomenally toneful amp. I use channel 1 80% of the time, and the stock speaker does a great job.

If I ever needed to replace the speaker, I would get a Jensen C10R without hesitating, basically a clone of the stock speaker.

You need to consider the P10R is an alnico speaker... all alnico speakers enhance the treble. If you like the sound of the speaker and just hate the treble something like a WGS smooth cone would be perfect (by being ceramic and having a smoother cone it vastly reduces treble).

I never tried the Lil Buddy but have tried the C Rex - if you have a way of taming the bass (I use a low cut filter) it's an exceptional jazz speaker, very smooth highs but still lots presence. But it does have a lot of bass, not sure if all hemp cone speakers (like the Lil Buddy) are like that.

I like the Weber 10" neomag for this application.

Consider the Weber California 10 - ceramic with 'Large H (screen cloth) dome.
I have one, but with the paper dome, in my Henriksen JazzAmp110.
It's smoother than the Eminence Ragin Cajun I tried, but still has a tighter bottom end and brighter top end than the stock Beta 10A.

+1 for the Lil' Buddy which I installed 3 years ago in my Superchamp XD without any problem, it's a 10 mn operation.
Compared to the stock loudspeaker, the Eminence sounds fuller, smoother and deeper, with an extended headroom.
As said by other, it's darker tone is a matter of taste, but it remains in my amp since.
