Keep playing the one they have at the music store. Love everything about it except the Bigsby.

You may block the Bigsby's spring off and then you have a regular tailpiece.

Fine Gibson, good value, particularly the one in black.

Why is the one in black a better value? Are they normally more expensive?

This one can be had for $2000, new. Maybe even less given that I'm friends with a lot of the employees(and that I might be working there myself soon)

Found an NOS Black for sale: $1799. For what is a nice-sounding nice-playing laminate Gibson archtop, essentially a twin pup ES-175 Thinline in a tuxedo, that's what I call quite good. Those P94 pups are nice too.

I played through a Genz Benz tube amp, loved the dist sound on the bridge PU. Seems more versatile than an ES-175.

You're after tone dragons man. I think you need a tube amp first.

It seems a good value for a close 175 tone.
How much matter the presence of a Bigsby and the Fenderish headstock will be up to the individual.
I probably would not get one just because of that, but that is MY problem

Fair point, but I do have a few tube amps. Let me get them out from the basement and try with my ES-139 before making hasty decisions If not, I'm looking at a $300 2x12 Peavey Classic 50 downtown

There's a Peavey Bandit 75 for sale locally for $40, is it worth even looking at?

    No. It's a diversion.

I really, REALLY disliked the silly Bigsby B6 on mine, so after a LONG search I found a traditional TP with a mounting plate large enough that I could drill holes into and match the existing holes in the guitar.

Ebay listing number 390775933888 was the best $22.00 I spent on a guitar "downgrade" ever.

If anyone is interested in replacing a B6 I'll make a cardboard traced template for the TP I got on Ebay for you.

    Here's a pic of the 195.

Has anyone compared them with es-137 (hb's) or es-135 (P90's)?

All of these three git's bodies look like 'thinline es-175'.

Actually I have a 137, 135 (this model came with both HB's and P100/P90's) a 195, and a 175 (OK I like ES's) The 195 is fully hollow and is more like a 175 than anything else but thinner at 2 3/8"). The 135/137 models are semi hollow more like a 335 with a single Venetian cutaway.

I don't have 175T specs but I guess the 195 is pretty close.

The idiotic Bigsby was (thankfully) not screwed to the top but it does press down rather firmly. The tailpiece and wood bridge really did change the character of the sound, but the P94's might be improved on. I vacillate between wanting to swap at minimum the neck pup or leave them as they are.

Players that let the guitar head, and body shape influence their ears are IMO missing some great guitars and the 195 just may be considered one some day.

There is a youtube video of a guy playing one of these and comparing it to a 175 playing "The Nearness of You". I think the 195, sounds as good, and maybe better than the 175. Check it out.

This model seems to have produced a lot of negative comments (ugly headstock; Bigsby hatred). They were available here in the states for about $1600.

For that price they'll probably hold their value fairly well. The Bigsby is replaceable. The straight pull headstock (a la Fender) is probably more functional that the traditional Gibson type 3 on a side tuners.

You might get a little joshing from other players but if your ego is secure this might be a very good gtr.

Is it this one? Both sound nice. Quite alike but they still have their own voice.

Ha! You are so right, the headstock is THE test!

I don't see why... so many of "us" have Fender guitars :-)

    !
Yes, thank you for locating this youtube clip and posting it. Both gee-tars sound great, at least to me.

On an earlier post, I coined the acronym "NEDSEQ": Non-Essential Difference Subject to Equalization.... I have more guitars than I need, and most of them will do the job for jazz: an L4-CES, a lawsuit 175, a Heritage 550, and a 339, and some partscasters. Most of these minor tonal differences can be tweaked away...those that can't are still mostly pretty minor....French Vanilla...Breyers Vanilla....Dreyers Vanilla....SealTest Vanilla...Haagen Dazs Vanilla...homemade Vanilla....and maybe plain Vanilla.

Sometimes I think a really plain, unadorned tone...an unamplified strat ...makes it easier to "sound things out" with my ear if I'm trying to figure out a riff, a tune or a chord progression....fewer overtones I think....my baseball bat strat is, in a lot of ways, my favorite guitar...quiet but pure sound, doesn't bother the neighbors, really ergonomic...stays in tune...grab it off the wall rack near my bed at 11 pm at night if some little musical bit is nagging me.

    bumpign this up again.

bought myself a jazzmaster baritone guitar for my 20th birthday for duets and because i could get it for a really great price- really digging the sound of single coils in bebop

my gas is not cured for the ES-195!

Well there's an old auto ad slogan that says: "Ask the man who owns one"

Unfortunately opinions from others for your style, sound requirements and other criteria make that statement unrealistic for guitars.

    I would changevthat slogan to:

"Get one in your hands and play it."

If either the store shut the lights to close after losing track of your demo time or you plunked down plastic to try it at home after 5 minutes playtime . you have a winner.

I suppose I /could/ get a downpayment plan, like I did with my other Gibson. Not sure if I /should/

I don't know...the Bigsby has really grown on me. I have a Gretsch Country Club, after all. The Bigsby goes well with the hockey stick headstock.

Looking for one in Transparent Amber with the Gold hardware.

Yeah, that's the one I'm looking at. Played it more today. Sweet Jesus, I really want that guitar.

I just saw this description on Amazon uk, which I find quite amusing. It's listed as a rockabilly guitar.

"Raw and refined in equal measure, the new ES-195 from Gibson Memphis is a rock-and-roll machine pure and simple, but can turn its ferocity to a surprisingly broad range of styles within that realm and plenty more outside it, too. Combining the rich pedigree of Gibson's tradition in archtop-electrics with the snarl and attitude of the company's seminal solidbody rockers, the ES-195 makes a striking statement with both its beguiling looks and monster tone. What's more, the ES-195 can turn its hand to jazz without breaking a sweat, thanks to a body proportioned and constructed in homage to the legendary ES-175 but 3/4 thinner and a pair of humbucker-sized P-94 single-coil pickups. But one look at that Firebird-inspired Trini Lopez neck and headstock tells you there's far more under the hood: add some serious attitude when you hit the strings, then prepare yourself for pure rock fury. A Bigsby vibrato tailpiece takes it all to another dimension, letting the ES-195 run from classic rockabilly grow."

    That last sentence seems truncated.

Yeah Jab, I "get" the Bigsby thing but Gretsch and Ibanez own that market, and Gibby putting one on and not making it optional puzzled me... the first time I saw it was... WHY?

Playing mine is a dream now, it was well worth the mod. Oh I also pulled the trem from my Cort NAMM Triggs. Another big improvement.
