i occasionally wonder the same thing, and they seem to be the cheapest "boutique", handwired whatever versions of fender variants. but i don't have much to add, other than humbucker music has many in stock, so they may be the way to go.

Jesse,
You're up in Seattle -- give Jack Anderson a call! He'll make what you want:

Nice duet work Jesse!

I have a vintage sound 15. Nice amp for sure. A little richer sounding and bigger sounding than a super champ.
It's hard to say if you would have troubles with the bass. I keep mine set around 3 and I have to be mindful of the bass when playing with a bass player. You can turn the bass to 0 but you lose some volume and muscle. Blackface type amps have lots of bass. Do you use the blackface setting on your super champ?
I believe the super champ has a 10" speaker as well so I'm inclined to think that you may have some challenges with the 12" speaker and bigger more open cabinet.
-
Turning the bass to zero does remove a ton of bass but it kind of turns the sound to... I don't know, cardboard? And then you have to compensate by turning the volume up to keep the same level - if you had the volume at 2.5 you might have to turn it 5 to keep the same level with the bass turned down.
There is plenty of headroom for me in a vocal, bass, guitar trio. The odd times we've had a drummer, I have had no problem keeping the sound clean. I'm at the low end of the scale though as far as playing loud.
This stuff can be so subjective, but to me the VS 15 is a coloured and open sound and it does impose it's own 'footprint' to your sound - a fender Princeton sound but the 12'' speaker changes the overall feel. The mid control can do quite a bit to dial the sound in though, but your concern is primarily with the bass.
I would suspect that you would have to wrestle with this amp a bit. How do you get along with modelling or transistor amps? Would they be more controllable in the bass? Another idea might be to look for a head that you like and then the problem would be reduced to a suitable cabinet.
-
I have a VS 40. I keep the bass and mid at 1 -2 and the treble at 1
I've had it for 4 years and love the amp.
-
Check out the Dr. Z Maz 18 Jr.
Hand wired, affordable, and sounds amazing! I've not tried to dial out all the bass, but I've always managed to come up with a sound I like.

I've had numerous princeton style amps with both 10 and 12" speakers...Carr Sportsman, VS15, PRRI...My favorite is the stock PPRI..but I never liked any of them with PAF's. My current amp is a Gries 5 which plays well with every guitar i've plugged in....My recommendation is to call Dave Gries and get his thoughts. The 5 has volume, gain, bright switch, treble, bass, mid and master volume control. It dials up a lot of great tones....I love it for jazz...it has warmth, clarity...and a surprising amount of headroom. Dave has higher powered amps if you need more headroom. His builds are of superb quality and prices are more than reasonable. Good hunting.

Groove Tubes have a short life. I like the tone of TADs better, but JJs seem to be the most reliable, short of NOS.
i have a vintage sound 35 that started as his version of a deluxe, which Rick upgraded for me to the jazz 35. It sounds awesome through a separate semi closed 1x 12, and really good through the stock deluxe cab that it came in, with lower bottom end, and which has a celestion lead 80 in it right now. Rick is partial to Weber Californias, but those are a bit shrill to my ear. I like celestions and EVs.
Rick is great to deal with, the amps have a very versatile tone stack and he will tweak it to your taste, if you know what pot cap values you want to try. David Allen makes a similarly great amp. Haven't played a Griese, but Dr. Z also makes great amps that are killer for rock and blues, as well as jazz, though i like wattage in the range of 35 to 50 for the headroom, myself.

Jesse, go and talk to Michael Biller of Sound Island Music, Mercer Island.

You give up too easily. Try Michael again. He is within driving distance of you. 2bop and I had good dealings with him.
As for the driver, if 10" is too bassy for ya try a Jupiter 8" or two 8". Tighter faster more lithe more nimble response.
In a live situation there is nothing to choose between a pcb PRRI and boutique hardwired. You can often find the PRRI used.
Try a solid-state rectifier such as a Weber Copper Cap in place of the tube.Last edited by Jabberwocky; 08-17-2016 at 07:00 AM.

The good news is this: if you try out the Fender PRRI, like it and buy it, use it till it craps out on ya then send it to Rick Hayes of VSA to have it converted to a hardwired turret-boarded version.
If you like the Fender PRRI, you will like the VSA 15. If you don't like the PRRI the VSA15 won't improve much on it. Rick adds a Mid control. Helpful.
I don't know what your budget is but you may also consider the Dr. Z Z-lux which is a 4 6V6 version of the PR/Deluxe Reverb.
Marcwhy suggested Jack Anderson. Take a drive out to Jack's and see what he can whip up for you. Jack's prices are very reasonable and his build quality is high. prices
You owe it to yourself to try Jack out. He can tune it to what you want, how you want it since you are local to him!

But a VSA35SC runs on 6L6s
! You said you didn't like 6L6s
...
It is the VSA22SC that runs on 6V6s. That is Rick's single-channel Deluxe Reverb. The 35SC is the single-channel Vibrolux.Last edited by Jabberwocky; 08-25-2016 at 04:17 AM.

I recently took delivery of a new Vintage Sound 22sc and it is hands down the nicest amp I have ever owned! I have not enjoyed an amp this much since I had to leave my original ’65 Super Reverb in Germany after the first Gulf War. It is what everyone always said the Deluxe Reverb should be. Just the perfect BF Fender sound in my opinion. It drifts in and out of overdrive like you hear on recordings instead of the on/off effect I found in the DRRI. I suspect the WGS speaker is largely responsible for the difference there. The Reverb is the best spring verb I have heard on any contemporary model. The EQ controls REALLY work and the mid control is pure heaven. Built stout but light as a feather. Yeah it’s my perfect amp! I will be replacing my PRRI with a VS 15 with a 10” speaker for my living room amp just as soon as I sell my Valvetrain Trenton that I have played for 6 years but was easily replaced by the 22sc.
I can’t speak highly enough of this amp! It would totally be worth the shipping back to Humbucker Music to try one out! I seriously doubt you would return it!
