I have to say I love the look of this bass from Ibanez, and although I don't have a bass, if I were to get one, this would certainly tempt me...

Warwick
Warwick Star Bass II Bubinga - 4 String Bass
Warwick expanding in already extensive product line with the "ultra-retro-cool" hollow-body bass aptly named The Starbass II. The Star Bass II is a reissue of the venerable classic Framus Star Bass, linking past and future and Framus and Warwick companies in this one very unique model. The Warwick Starbass II cleverly merges the traditional hollow-body design of the Framus Star Bass with high-quality craftsmanship and modern technology.
Top and back of this future classic hollow body model are made of precious and elegantly grained and sealed bubinga wood. The sides are solid bubinga. The glued neck (like the original Framus Star Bass) of the Warwick Star Bass II is made of Ovangkol and it has a Wenge fingerboard. In order to get the Starbass II's killer tone to the amplifier, Warwick outfitted the instrument with 2 passive MEC CRB single coil pickups. They deliver a full and warm sound without the characteristic single coil hum. Your ears will be amazed when they hear how defined and clean the bass lines play on this dream instrument!

Nice, but not quite as sexy to my eyes. Interesting pickup placements.
-
Hmm. Not sure about the Warwick. Again, slightly strange pickup placements.
-
like pauls first hofner..bass and more bass!! haha
warwick came out of framus (another old hollowbody bass concern)..in fact they still issue under the framus brand...
here's framus star bass..ala bill wyman...super loud acoustically as pups and controls are pickguard mounted
i love hollowbody electric basses
cheers
-
I like how this thread is developing. Any other hollow basses?
-
like giving a pyro a blowtorch!! haha
another current hofner
new guild starfire reissue (one of my faves)
another fave..was briefly reissued recently, but now gone again..the ronnie lane/small faces harmony h22
cheers
-
Yes, that Guild looks good. And I love the nobs on the Harmony! And the finger holder beneath the pickup.
-
Not to mention that outrageous scratchplate!
-
Any fretless models?
-
the harmony has that switch that "varitones" the single pup...much like the epi rivoli had
many of the vintage style hollow basses are short scale 30"..so not that popular for fretless...you really have to have your intonation & fretting down!! ( i know you do rob, but...)
cheers
-
new d'angelico hollow bass comes optional fretless...32" medium scale..
cheers
-
That Ibanez bass is a looker. Tony Scherr used a Hofner Club for a lot of work with Bill Frisell, and that bass seems to be getting popular with the Americana music crowd.
-
Love them all, but that Ibby is super sweet.
-
hofner club is great bass...lightweight and very comfortable...and escapes the hofner violin/beatle references if that bothers you..one of my faves
saw tony scherr back in knitting factory days playing one of these..contrabass balalaika
i asked him. tony how you tune it?..(3 strings)..he said hell if he knew..he tuned it like a bass..e-a-d
the ultimate hollowbody!! haha
cheers
-
Like them all. The D'Angelico is very tidy.
Just found Rob Allen's website Fretless Semi-hollow Bass Guitars Handcrafted in California by Rob Allen . He seems to specialise in hollow-body basses, all very beautiful:

I wanted the most comfortable 34" scale bass I could find so I built my own. This is my take on a R.M. Mottola design. She weighs in at only 5.5 pounds. It is about the lightest electric bass I have owned to date. The semi hollow body does give her a great acoustic vibe. For me the single Kent Armstrong pickup is all I need on a bass.
-
Interesting! And congratulations.
-
weird but cool!!..like the "gumby" headstock!
lightweight basses are really helpful to comfort..esp for guitarists...however you don't want neck dive...used to play a beautiful super light vox hollow teardrop bass, but the neck (with huge headstock) dove like an axe...scary
cheers
ps- matt c's bass also 24 fret..and i like the burst, the way it circles the pup..cool effectLast edited by neatomic; 09-07-2016 at 04:45 PM. Reason: ps-
