So, I will still be working on this (for a while probably) because there are just so many different possibilites with settings, but here is my initial sound test with the GT100. I will use other guitars in the future but I figured for now that the L5 is a good standard.

The eq is different for every amp model of course - I tried to keep them fairly true to the way they were set up when I got the amp but every one has been tweaked. The only one that is just a preset is the "jazz clean" one which I included since I thought it was relevant and jazz guitarists would want to hear it. It is the only one I included delay on since the preset came with it, and the compressor that is also in that patch is disabled because I do not like playing with them.

I think the next video will be setting the amps to be more standardized, or to try to cop a different vibe for each one. Many of these were set up by default to have a high enough gain to break up so the biggest adjustment I did was to lower the gain enough to be clean but, although I did tweak eq's I did not do a whole lot to them (with the exception of the bassman, '65 twin and Princeton which I played with more than the others). I like that some are inherently different, like the brighter ones I think will be fun to try to get a Grant Green kind of sound etc.

Let me know if you like any of them more than others. I have my favorites so far but I won't mention them for now. This is what is in the video.

    '59 Bassman
    '65 Twin
"Jazz Clean" preset (though I would include it even though it is not an independent amp model due to relevance
    '57 Twin
    Bandmaster
    Brown Deluxe
    Excelsior
    '65 Princeton

...I forgot a couple too, like the Deluxe which has a very nice sound, and the "studio preamp" which is not great but I should include it next time. I will post another one soonish.

I really liked the sound of both tweeds, the 59 Bassman and the 57 twin.
    Thanks for doing this.

Great stuff. These videos are invaluable to people like me who are isolated from guitar stores.

Nice demo - thank you very much!

I liked the 59 bassman, the bandmaster and the 65 Princeton the best. Perhaps my favorite was the bandmaster. They had that chime and bold midrange. But generally, these were pleasant jazzy sounds to listen too!

Thanks for putting this up, Paul. This ought to shift boxes for Fender. I liked them all. Works well in a jazz context. Between the Fender GT100 and the Boss Katana 100 is a hard choice; both have very good clean tones.

Love the 70 L5CES in your lap. What a beautiful jazzbox.

Thanks guys - happy to have done it.

I was going to try the Katana too but a few things had me not giving it a go. The GT100 is so much lighter, you can configure everything from the amp very easily and also through the well-though out app (no computer use required) and there were more features and better connectivity. It is cool living in an age where there are multiple valid modeling amps for jazz though. Not too far back I would not have considered a modeling amp.

Many thanks for this. I was expecting to like the Princeton Reverb the best, but my first choice was the '65 Twin (not the "Jazz Clean" version).

Oops, I forgot to ask: Were these put through the speaker and mic'ed, the line out, or the USB?

The Jazz Clean preset is one of my least favorites, although it is useable. My guess is that they included the preset for people playing solid bodies to give them what they would consider to be a jazz sound and which is why they included the delay (which I did tone down a bit) and compression (which I disabled).

It was mic'ed with a Rose NT2 set to a cardioid pattern. You can kind of see it behind me - it is roughly two feet in front of the amp. I want to try the line out and USB in future recordings - I haven't tried them yet since I am more concerned first with the speaker sound.

They all sound serviceable. I like the '65 Twin the best.

What a great demo, thank you for doing that! I get so tired of rock-oriented demos on YouTube, you rarely hear anything useful.

I agree the 65 Twin was the best, but I liked most of the presets, they all sound a little different but mostly usable. I don't think I would use the Jazz Clean (blah), the Brown Deluxe (too much gain) or the Excelsior (lacks bottom end, surprisingly). But there's certainly a lot to like here and I agree, I think this will help sell amps for Fender.

Sure thing - I'm glad that it is being useful!

I was surprised by some of the comments on YouTube that apparently the amp is getting bad reviews. One guy even said that it is basically awful next to the Katana and anything I played would sound good on any amp (not as a compliment but more of a "clean tone jazz will sound good on anything" uninformed opinion I think).

I don't play high gain stuff unless I am teaching a lesson where the student wants to learn something that uses it but I was surprised to hear that it is not checking all the boxes for other guitarists. It really is a great Swiss Army knife amp for me that does a lot of things really well. I have still been tweaking the models I like and am so happy with it. The details you can dial in are very well thought out. Something like delay isn't anything I have usually used in the last because I think that it can sound like a cliche but you can dial it in with a variety of ways on this amp and really get a subtle sound with it that thickens things up without being like "oh here is another delay jazz guy"

When I have some time, maybe tomorrow since I am beat tonight and am just staying up to get my nightly practice session in, but next I am going to record through the same amp models with my new PM100. I was thinking of doing that already to get a good representation of how a laminate body archtop sounds with the various models and I was going to use my D'Agostino (a '77 lawsuit 175) but I think the PM100 will do much better because it is really nailing the 175 tone for me.

After all the Katana hype I went down to Guitar Center and tried a Katana 50. I found it completely uninspiring and had little desire to mess with it. I tried again for a short time a week later and had the same experience.

I tried the smaller GT and was intrigued and wanted to play with it more. I'm not sure why this is, and I'haven't bought either one, but based on those tow short trials I'd buy the Mustang.

It's interesting--they are basically just amp sim plugins in a box. I've done a lot of work with amp sim plugs and I find that I always have to struggle to make them do what I want--they keep trying to steer me towards some sort of "RAWK" tone.

GT 40 loud enough to keep up with big band? I see guys using Blues Jrs and Princetons.

Because that is their market, Jazz guitarist don't buy enough gear to make it worth more that a passing thought for music gear makers. Even Jazz focused manufactures have a tough go because R&D costs are so high for low quantities they sell.

The modeler amp that sample amps (is there a specific term for the modeling amp that sample real amp?) those are the best bet for the Jazz world in future. That would provide a good starting point for finding your sound. So this Fender GT and Roland Katana seem to be a reasonably price way to stick a toe in the modeling waters.

I found a cheap way to get the four switch pedal and be able to use the looper as well as the other functionality it gives. Amazon has the previous generation four switch foot pedal for half the price of the new one - apparently the old one is the same as the new one but is just labeled differently. Fender is going to be sending, free of charge, magnetic covers with the correct labels to owners of the old switches so I ordered the old one from Amazon. Pretty cool it seems - I will check back in tomorrow after it arrives to confirm that everything works with it.

Just checking back in regarding the foot switch. The old one (new but older model) arrived today and it does work identically to the new one with only the labels on the pedal not being correct. Since my looper broke this was a good 40 dollar way to use that with the amp and getting the pedal for half of what the new ones cost, and the other functionality is cool too. Eventually I would like to get the expression pedal too, if anything to just use as a volume pedal.

Still loving the amp by the way. I have not been using my Bud much...which is saying something because that amp is also phenomenal.

Even though I have a Katana 50, I'm beginning to experience slight GAS for the GT 40. I can almost justify having both - one for weekdays and one for the weekend - honestly. My only problem with the Katana (or with any amp, in fact) is the shrillness of the headphone output when playing with even the slightest dirt levels. This is actually a serious complaint as anybody who plays in an apartment with thin walls (my mid-week abode) will well know.

Has anybody tried a new Mustang with good headphones on any overdriven patches ? If so, does it replicate what comes out of the speakers ?

I recorded a homework assignment for the JBGW and decided to use the opportunity to see how the direct out of the amp sounds. It is very good - I am not a fan of direct out and the only other amp I have been happy with it is the Henriksen Bud but this one is now also going to be totally useable with a direct out. It is much brighter than the speaker is though so I needed to eq it differently - the treble is all the way down, mids all the way up and bass at around 10 o'clock. I remember reading that Grant Green maxed out his mids and turned everything else down which is why I tried it. That worked well too but I wanted a little more bottom than was there with that turned down too. There is also a very small amount of hiss through the speaker and because I play and record late at night that is noticeable when mic'ing but that noise does not come through the line out. I wonder why that is? Good to know, at least. In real life playing volumes it is not a problem because it is very quiet and is a constant volume - it doesn't get louder as you turn up the volume.

So I got a Mustang 100 for Christmas. I bought it for myself. Only way to be sure.
Latest firmware, app on phone. A week in and I love to play through it. Very nice cleans.
Cant really say anything about dist and metal amps as I have not used them.

App use is really good integrated. The screen on the amp is largeish and clear.

Thanks Rio for testing the different makes. You sold Fender an amp.

    Cheers

Hello, everyone! I was thinking about this amp. I just have a zt lunchbox first version... and looking for cheap, light and powerfull amp for gigs. I have the chance to buy a fender gt100 or a roland cube 80 for the same price... big dilemma hahhaha
