    Hey all,

I’m thinking about trying a multieffects pedal, but would like one with high quality sound. I tried an ME-80 in the past, but I couldn’t get good tones, especially for dirt. I have tried a number of OD pedals, but could not bond with them. So far the best sound that I have gotten for effects and dirt is the Yamaha THR-10. I use this at work with a mic in front of it hooked to the PA system. (I work at a hospital doing Music Therapy, and we do band stuff with the patients.)

Any advice? I’m not looking for anything with a lot of tweeking and options, just a couple of good sounds.

    Thx for any help!

You should probably mention a budget.

check out Boss Gt-1 (lower budget - great value for money), or the Helix stuff (more expensive)

Hiya Marc!! Hope all is well!

Re budget: Willing to pay for great tone! But not interested in a lengthy learning process.

Re Gt-1: I was able to try the bass version of this at GC, but they didn’t have guitar version. The bass version had a nice quality of tone inside of the store.

    Helix—I’ll check this out online.

Clearly this won't help because you've already tried it, but I thought I'd comment on the ME80.
    it
    I have used the ME50, ME70 and ME80.

I don't know that they sounded much different. The ME80 has more footswitches and EQ options. I don't actually use those options very much, but another player might.

The ME80 has a lot of ways to generate distortion. There are 11 options in the OD/DS module, each with drive, tone and level controls.

There is a solo setting in the Comp/FX1 module that may be relevant. The compressor may also help.

There are 9 amp models, each with three band EQ and gain, as well as level.

There is a boost setting in the EQ/FX2 module.

And, whatever you do with those modules you can add various sorts of modulations and delay.

So, it can take hours of fiddling to explore all the options.

When I first tried to get a distortion sound I was disappointed. And, in a way, I still am. But, the more time I spent, the closer I got to something I liked. For me, it was mostly the Preamp module.

Also, when I first started using the ME series, I used it on Manual and didn't bother making patches.

A couple of years ago I spent an afternoon fiddling with it and ended up with four patches I like -- and those are my sounds. I rarely use anything else.

For many years I used my Korg AX1500G multi-effects pedal. I'm now using a more limited number of effects, mounted on a pedal train board - but I still pull out the Korg occasionally. Easy to use with lots of preprogrammed sounds, with lots of easily accessible memory slots for the sounds you can create yourself. Each slot has an A or B memory, which is great for switching from rythm to solo.

People seem to like the Zoom G3N and G5N units - I've still got a Zoom G3 (earlier model replaced by the G3N) and the sounds are pretty good - I won't be selling it, even though I've recently got a Line 6 Helix LT.

Helix is amazing, but I suspect overkill for what you're after. There are rumors/leaks saying that L6 are bringing out an effects-only unit, like the Helix, but smaller - could be good if so, not sure what the price point would be for that though.

I have a Boss MS-3 multi effects also, which I like the sound quality of, and the overdrive and distortion effects are excellent on that - it's a nice unit, but I feel a bit over-priced new (at least in the UK) - I will be selling this anyhow, but I did use it for a few gigs, and it worked well.

These are just the ones I know about though, I'm sure other options are out there that are worth considering.

As a very happy ms-3 user I'll disagree with the statement of it beeing overpriced. It's not just multieffects but also a switcher/controller. If you use the loops for your analog pedals, control your midi rack/pedals and use the onboard effects, the value is incredible. Just as a multieffects unit, likely the wrong purchase.

No problem! your opinion is just as valid as mine - and I will be selling one soon, so I shouldn't be talking it down should I... FWIW I did use the loops and had it as the heart of a pedal board, and it worked great for me like that. In the UK it's currently around £360, and was £400 when I got mine. I just felt something closer to £300 would be very competitive - but as I say, just one opinion, and these things are subjective. And it is a great-sounding thing, with or without external effects, and well put together, and a unique kind of design.

Try with a voicelive playGtx, small, and excelent for guitars and vocals. I believe that connects directly ti PA. Good efects,

If you're gonna go straight to PA, you're going to need someting with a cabinet simulator/emulator(whatever it is) to smooth up the sound a bit. Then you're looking at something like the Helix. Mooer just came out with the GE200 which has this, if you want to be kind to yer wallet. I sold one to a friend, pretty decent-sounding unit at a great price.

If you just need fx, I love anything made recently by Zoom. Which model were you asking? GT-100 is made by Boss.

If you need to connect to a PA, I would recommend something that can handle 3rd party IRs.

    Hey all,

Thx for the replies! I’m not really looking to go through a PA. That’s just an example of what I do at my day job working at a forensicpsychiatric facility doing patient/staff band group. I just take the little Yamaha THR-10 and put a mic in front of it that’s hooked up to the PA. It’s just very portable and gets the job done. Additionally, I actually like the OD from the different options as well as the delay. I bring this up, because I’m looking for a multifaceted pedal that could maybe get similar tones. Or else something else that sounds good and is simple. I also would like to stay away from IRs and all that, if I could just get a great sound with a good pedal.

Zoom MS 100-BT is a Zoom pedal that looked very friendly and sounds good in videos.

I've got a Yamaha DG Stomp with power supply that I have no use for. You can PM me if interested.

It should be noted that the Zoom pedals are excellent quality and out of all of them, I’d buy the G5N. Because in addition to the excellent effects, it also has an auxiliary jack for mp3/ iPad and it is a damn good latency free Digital Interfece for recording.
I have a regular G3 that record with and I like it. But it doesn’t have the auxiliary jack.

I've got the MS-100BT which is a multi-pedal in a standard stomp box size. Great pedal, enough oomph on the output signal to use it as a DI into a powered speaker, etc. It has a ton of built in sounds and many more downloadable from Zoom. You'll have to sit with it to set up effects changes, amp models, etc., but once that's done it's easy to switch on the fly between different sets of effects. A lot of their effects are clones of well-known products like the Tube Screamer, etc. I've used it at gigs as a DI to the PA, skipping having an amp altogether.

Just as a word of caution, the MS-100BT was discontinued by Zoom and needs an IOS device. It's better to go with the MS-50G, which has the same fx as the MS-100BT, if you have the latest firmware and will have more updates, in theory. And it can be done with a computer.

a word on the zooms- i bought my ms70 new last month and it came pre-updated, so i didn't have through the usb to computer processes that vexed so many and can actually brick your pedal if you screw it up. i just made a post about how much i'm liking mine, and i guess the ms50 shares most, if not all of the same effects, but has the amp modeling and dirt tones as well. so i assume their other products are as sound.

that aside, the only other things that haven't already been listed would be something like a tech 21 flyrig (in the flavor of your choice) or trex soulmate. should you want simplicity and solid, straightforward tones instead of options.

Take a look at Line 6 Pod HD500X too, in addition to effects, you get models (I only use their preamps) of many different tube amps that you can plug into your power section or power amp to a cab of your choice (no IR needed), and you get a volume/wah pedal plus a looper in the same stomp box. The price will be very low because everyone is upgrading to Helix. You also have the option of using a Variax guitar with it.

So much out there that it's tough to narrow it down. If you want "everything" in a box, you can get it, but it might 1) be too much stuff, 2) too big, 3) too complicated, or 4) too expensive. If you want just stomp box effects (no amp and cab simulators) that's another category with the same 4 questions. If you want just the effects, not amps, I'd look to Line 6 M9, M13 or the new HX. I have the M13, like it except for the distortion/OD/comp models and the physical size. New HX looks sweet but a little expensive.
