I just came across this on YouTube surfing NAMM '18 videos. I have played several Milkman amps and they are incredible... and they should be at just over $2,000.
Now Milkman is introducing "The Amp" at $699. Thought some on the forum might find this class D amp intriguing.
The Amp: 50W Guitar Amplifier pedal by Milkman Sound
What is The Amp? First and foremost, it’s a 50W Guitar amplifier. The preamp is based around a single 12AX7 running at high voltage in a discrete Class A circuit. The tube preamp reacts with a guitar the same way any tube amplifier does: it generates harmonics and the sweet sounding high fidelity tone that tubes are known for. Along with tube EQ. there is on-board reverb and tremolo effects so that The Amp can be used as a grab and go amplifier. Foot switches for bypassing the effects are built in. A Class D power section delivers 50 watts into 8ohms, or 100 watts into 4ohms.

hah, had been meaning to post the same vids!..tim marcus/milkman is top bay area builder...the pedal steel guys love them cause they are loud and clean
running the 12ax7 at high voltage will give it true tube tone warmth
also has nice trem and the digi reverb seems to be voiced nicely as well
good stuff...
cheers

Thanks for sharing - I'm interested!

Personally that demo didn't sound particularly good to me. Not talking about the playing, the tones that amplifier is producing. Give me a $700 Princeton or deluxe reverb reissue any day over that
-
ditto- love the concept, underwhelmed by the tones. they aren't bad but you can do much better for $700. but i can appreciate the simplicity and the di out is a huge plus, though. second demo sounded a lot better. they may have something here.
-
these are all decidely non jazz demos...for a product thats just hitting the market...give it time
the knowledge is there..simple yet clever controls..match it with the right cab!!!
tim/milkman doesn't mess around!!! his amp line has stellar reputation
cheers

Any comparison has to consider weight and portability. My Fender tube amp sounds great sitting like a boat anchor in my music room.

When i saw it the Andertons vid, I thought it did a great job of producing blackface type tones. The Polytone gang will hate it lol.

If the new Milkman thing gets within a country mile of the Princeton then I will be getting one. We’ll see!

Listening to it again I think miss the power tubes a little. I think you could probably get similar results with a Joyo American sound into a pedal sized class d power amp lol. But I’d have to audition it.
-
Need to hear it in person probably, but I'm happy with Quilter Aviators!

I’ve been tossing around the idea of purchasing a stompbox-sized, stand-alone amplifier, the reasons for having one being manifold. I almost pulled the trigger on a Quilter 101 Reverb but something has caused me hesitance. This Milkman amp just might be what I’m looking for. These types of amps seem to be a growing trend and Tim is wise to be jumping on the bandwagon, offering an affordable alternative to his understandably high-priced combo amps.
FWIW, I rarely judge amps or guitars by demos on YouTube. Blues and rock are the obsession of most these days and seems to dominate the YouTube demos. I am happy that Tim Marcus was interviewed, and that, coupled with a perusal of his website has convinced me way more than what I heard on the demos.

Fender 65 Deluxe Reissue - musical instruments - by owner - sale
@christiaan77
just one example of deluxe reverb, stand corrected probably can be had for 600$. Put in a good neo magnet speaker in to make it lightweight, even an out of shape English guy can lift that.
Let's be real here, most people still are going to want to have there own cab for this milkman, how is that more convenient than a fender combo?Last edited by callouscallus; 02-11-2018 at 04:11 PM.

Seems pretty cool, but 100watts solid state tends to be not very loud. Course, if it can match a Deluxe clean for clean then it's a hit by my estimations!

That said, I do quite often travel to gigs on public transport - it's not just weight but bulk that's an issue here. If I need to travel this way, it's usually due to parking or C-charge. I usually use a little AER alpha for this, but I wouldn't mind a lightweight cab/head combination (I have a light small cab already). Plus something that can double as guitar DI box and a preamp.
What I would like is something like the American Sound with reverb and built in class D power amp, actually. No fancy stuff, no multiple amp models, no gain structures, just one model, preferably solid state analog. This is almost it, but no reverb! FFS, why no reverb? (I could bring a pedal, but then that's another power supply.)
MINI AMP 50 - Baroni-Lab
I'd rather have a power amp with reverb as the AS runs on batteries, but this doesn't exist lol.
The Milkman ticks a lot of boxes - if it sounds good.

I suppose the alternative is to build a micro pedal board with:
Drive pedal
Preamp
Reverb
Power amp

Just for fun, I'm going to order one of these as soon as they're available. I really like the idea of this amp. Since I play a wide variety of music, I'm sure I can find a place in my music room for it.
-
Just kidding of course Christian! I actually have no knowledge of you physical condition.
-
Ermmm... I am in peak physical condition. Of course.

i think this could be neat for a number of uses- plugging into the pa instead of dragging a cab around, for instance. or using ir's or a cab simulator of some kind if you don't want to carry the real thing around. leaving plugged into your computer to record at a moment's notice. as a giant character pedal. maybe into something super clean and super light, like my roland ac33, or my carvin pa thing.
i was just underwhelmed by the sounds. maybe i was expecting more given the pedigree, if not the price. i'd need to hear it cranked, the headroom, what it sounds like with my guitars, or a nos tube, etc. there are several things that offer mostly the same out there, i'm sure, but this could be interesting if it delivers.
-
For a small lightweight head to plug into a PA, I like the GK MB200. I use it that way every week. I show up with my guitar and the MB200, connect power and XLR, and I'm ready. Actually, I leave the cables in place, don't even bother to carry them around. If there is no PA, I use my RE cab. But if I think I need to supply the speaker, I usually use my DV Mark Little Jazz, much more convenient and sounds as good. The MB200 fits in a briefcase, and almost into the pocket of cargo pants, if you have some with really big pockets.
I actually have several small bags that it fits into, and it weighs less than a kilo.

No reverb, but it almost sounds as if there were one. And my itty-bitty HOF mini adds it if I feel the need. I don't often need it, though. But if you have to have reverb, there are other heads available, just bigger and heavier, and not all have XLR out and Speakon connections. TBH, I've never heard an amp with built-in reverb that was acceptable to me. YMMV.
I found this Ibanez rarity
