    in a strat type setup

im gonna put a humbucker in a strat type
    guitar

    it’s a yam pacifica 112v
    its stock bridge H , middle S , neck S
with a 5 way switch at the moment

I want to keep a useful Neck + middle
sound if i can , so am thinking of making
    the new neck humbucker splittable

would a Dimazio 36th anniversary work
    well in this setup ?

The output will be cut in half, of course, which is a problem. The problem is that the full humbucker will sound dull through 250k pots and an .047 cap, the single coil will sound harsh and thin through 500K pots and a .022 cap. Wiring will take some consideration to route the signals through the best respective circuits. I'd consider a stacked 500k/250k volume pot and a master single coil tone (250k for the middle and split neck pickup) and master humbucker tone (500k for bridge and neck humbucker).

It's a 4 wire pickup so you can split it. Also note that DiMarzio has two different versions of pole spacing: Standard and Fender. Not sure what your Yamaha is. You'll need add a switch for the coil tap. Or you can a push/pull volume or treble pot which works well. You can also get fancier with the wiring and make the front and middle pickup work together in different ways (series/parallel/phase).

I don't have experience with the 36th, but a split humbucker in general wont sound exactly like two single coils in the 2 and 4 positions. I've used HSH and HSS setups for decades and imho the sound is plenty good for band work. It's not a problem in a band mix. If however you want a dead on classic inbetween sound a split hb may be a disappointment.

Btw my experience is that with a PAFish humbucker, the full humbucker + middle singlecoil can get quite plucky, given a bit of height adjustment of the pickups

thanks AJ do you mean plucky in a good
strat funky rhythm sound kinda way ?

BTW the vol pot is stock A500k
and the guitar already has a push pull tone pot which is set up to coil tap the bridge Humbucker already

the push-pull switch has a spare switch on it so if I got a four wire neck humbucker
i could wire it up to coil tap that too

maybe I should just play it stock
    for a while ?
    I’m minded that Bickert
didnt sound much different with the stock
tele pickup or the humbucker he had in the
    same guitar ....

yeah I think I’ll leave it as is for now
thanks tho everyone , good to have the info

Yeah, I think the inbetween position can go some of the way towards a hollow strat sound even with the humbucker unsplit. It's not a sound that will satisfy a Dire Straits fan, it's a thicker sound. but going from either of the single pickup positions to the 2 or 4 ones does lend a bit of air or hollowness just the same.

I would use a push/pull tone pot and add a 250k resister in parallel to get your resistance set up for single coils. I might shoot for a middle capacitor rating, say around 0.33uf, but you won’t know for sure until you experiment.
