I used Fender extra heavies for years before I got into gypsy jazz, now, it's Wegen 2.5mm for all my electrics. Since they're made of Delrin, they're pretty clacky, but they have the right tip shape and grip for me to be able to play very, very fast.

For gypsy I use either the 3.5 Gypsy Standard or the Wegen Trimus 5mm:

I have a Dugain Acetate 2.5 that I like the sound of, put it's too pointy and I can't get fast runs with it.

amazon. Brand is ‘Ultnice’, and they were something like $8.99 for a batch of three.

They do have a ‘chirp’, but that reduces significantly as my technique with them improves. It’s nearly inaudible when I’m playing well. And they look amazing.

    Hi

I have to say that the Blue Chip 60 is really nice. I have to admit it’s probably one of the best Jazz picks I own (it cost me £40).
The first thing you notice is it’s great to hold and grip and it stays put in your fingers. It produces a lovely clear consistent tone on round wound strings. It’s good for both rhythm and solo playing.
overall I would recommend trying one. Is it worth £40? Not really.

    Hello

I was interested to read your article on the TUSQ pick. I was looking for some the other day but they are crazy prices. Difficult to get in the UK.
I would like to try one.

    Kind regards

    Thanks for the review.

I think I'll stick with Dunlop red Jazz IIIs...

Funny you mention this - yes I do own one Eric Johnson Jazz III, which I ended up with by accident owing to the fact that I asked the guy at the guitar shop for several red Jazz IIIs and he must have had them all mixed up because I ended up with the Eric Johnson one along with a few of the Max Grip ones and a few normal ones.

My usual go-to is the Max Grip, but I will sometimes use the Eric Johnson. It's a bit thinner than the other ones but I'm not that picky... about picks.

I've used these for the past couple of years. Two Manouche picks (Left and Middle) and a Django Guitars pick on the Right. 4.5 mm for the two Manouche picks and 4.7 mm for the Django pick. I've tried about all of the different boutique picks out there. EML, Dugain, JB, etc. and these are the best I've found for me.

Clayton Raven 1.26mm and a 3mm Black Obsidian.
The Clayton is pretty nice and gives a nice warm tone.
I think these have replaced the the Clayton 1.9mm Black Jazz series.

    Hi all

Continuing my long search for the ideal Pick for Jazz guitar I most recently purchased a 6 pack of Taylor Pro 1.5mm 651 made from Thermex.
These are very nice indeed, somewhat very much like D’Andrea Pro Plec picks producing a a nice dark warm tone. Very good quality.
After playing one these for about 10 minutes or so I noticed they distort like Pro Plecs?

    Hi all

I was scanning EBay the other day and came across these:
D’Andrea 1.5mm Heavy tear drop pick.
These are very good. Nice warm sound and they don’t distort like the Pro Plecs seem to do.

    Hi all

Finally decided to order some Attack Pik Stealth III picks yesterday. They had a 30% discount for the holiday season: $10 for a pack of 10.
I got high hopes for these based on some recent reviews. I didn’t like the Stealth II.

    Anyone tried these yet?

I purchased one of these to try.
I believe Barney Kessel used one of these. Very nice but I would like it in a 651 shape. It’s the Jim Dunlop 500 Delrin 2mm purple one.

    Hi all,

Saw this lovely Pick the other day at Dirty Riffs, U.K.
The Resin Tones ‘Life On Mars’.
This is a really lovely Pick well worth trying. It produces a warm tone with no string noise.

Current pick enthusiasm is the Fred Kelly delrin heavy flatpick. Also experimenting with the Slick, Speed and Bumblebee thumbpicks.

    Hi all,

The other day I was searching for some vintage jazz guitar picks online and came across an offering on EBay, UK. £1.99 for two picks.
The EROS black Jazz pick circa 1960s, 1970’s? which approximates the the shape of a 651 shape Jazz III. It has smooth glossy edges and sharp tip 1 to 2mm. The glossy finish of the pick does in fact provide good grip. It’s a really good pick and has surprisingly just become my main pick. It good for fast runs with no string drag and good for rhythm work with a warm tone on round wound strings.

    Hi all

Here’s another pick work a try if you are seeking a fat, thick heavy tone. The one pictured, I have slightly modified by filing a bevelled edge around the tip to mid position. These picks are rubber coated. It doesn’t however, shred rubber all over your neck pick up.

Still persevering to get my speed up with a thick Clayton Acetal large triangle. It has a great tone for jazz. I've seen Rich Severson use them. Any advice please or is it just practice?
No prob with a reasonable level of speed with a Dunlop Nylon .88 for rock! But horrible on an archtop.

I like Delrin as a pick material. I used the 1.5 mm Dunlop Delrin 500s for many years. I still like them, but I usually prefer a smaller pick than the standard Fender size. I have cut some of the Dunlops down to a Jazz III size and like that quite a bit. I have one of the 2 mm picks and it's OK, just feels a wee bit unwieldy.

Lately I have been liking Fred Kelly picks. I have a couple of their Delrin picks, a white "heavy" which is quite a bit less heavy than many other manufacturers but has a really nice sound and feel, and their red 2 mm Delrin pick; I like both of those a lot even though they are full sized and much larger than the picks I normally prefer. I've also been experimenting with fake nails and the Fred Kelly Delrin Slick Pick thumbpicks and really enjoying that.

My "standard" pick remains the D'Andrea Pro Plec 358 size. It is the one I always seem to go back to. I also like the Jim Dunlop Jazz III Ultex pic.

I used nothing else for years. But the last bag I got was made after they changed something in the manufacturing process, and they now warp badly and quickly. There’ve been several threads about this, and D’Andrea doesn’t seem to have done anything to stop it.

After months of searching, I settled on Dunlop Jazztone 204s. The tone is great and they’re close to the 358 size and shape - just thicker. I still like the 358 ProPlecs best of all and really wish D’A would solve the warping problem.
