Here are two videos I did using different string sets on my Gibson L-5.
On this one I used Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Bebop (round-wound) strings.
On this one I used Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats.
Very different tones - but both are good. I tend to use the round-wounds more often. Wish I had two archtops and could keep one with flats and one with round-wounds.
Opinions?

I just changed from Sadowsky flats to Thomastik 13s flats (swing) on my Ibanez PM35 - I should add I wanted to keep using Sadowskys, but the shipping costs were to crazy. I really dig the Thomastiks, gorgeous, round, deep tone, my axe never sounded better, so: win-win.
Now I wish I had gone to 14s

Hi.
You don't say whether the tone settings are the same/similar for both sets of strings. The treble certainly *sounds" more rolled off in the case of the flats.
Anyway, I thought the Bebops were more suited to this guitar, in this style, they just sounded more vocal and seemed to bring out the innate tone of the instrument more.
Personally, I haven't tried TIs because I'm put off by the comparatively low tension/guage of their wound strings, and money is tight, so I'm sticking to the brands I know for now.
Oh, and nice playing and thanks for the chord voicings, very useful.

"Wish I had two archtops and could keep one with flats and one with round-wounds."
I started doing that with my two D'aquistos. The one in the center here keeps flats on her and the other one keeps round. but then I tried that with the J-9's. The one on the left with the Bigsby keeps rounds on and the one on the right keeps flats. And I have found myself gravitating more towards the flats simply because of the lack of squeek.
It's nice to be able to choose without having to change the set.
So, this is reason # 8,2876 to own more than one guitar!!!

What gauges did you use?
-
12's on the D'aquistos and 11's on the J-9 flats and 10's on the J-9 rounds with the Bigsby.
The necks on the J-9's are so thin, I'm afraid to use anything really heavy, but I think I'll try some flat 12's on one at some point...

definitely the flats—darker, richer, mellower

I lean towards the flatwounds, but liked both, and loved the playing and the whole xogram approach. Thanks for a couple great vids!

Also, whoever mentioned not wanting to try the TI strings because of the lower tension on the wrapped strings, you might want to give Newtone Archtop strings a shot. Very similar to the TI Bebops (double wrapped, nickle) but with more traditional gauges.

Have anyone compared the two TI flatwounds -- the Swing versus the George Benson flats?
-
Just ordered a set of Thomastik JS111. I've read some good things about TI. Thought I'd give them a try.

I've been a little busy with other things lately and haven't done much with it, but I think I'm going to replace those flats with regular old nickel round wounds like it came with. I also put a set of flats on my Artcore AS-73 and they seem to be working fine although now that they've settled in I need to do a tweaking on the set up.

Hi,
I like the sound of your guitar with Beebops. I've used TI Flatwounds, too, but prefer the more acoustic sound of roundwounds. I use a set of GHS pure nickel roundwounds (13-56) on my Gretsch Country Club and love the sound. I would try those TI Beebops, but the strings are too thick for my tailpiece near the ball end because of this silk wraped around. And I'm not willing to pay the price for TI strings. I live in the city, where TI strings are produced, and they are more expensive here than in the US...
Cheers,

BTW, I see on your myspace page you are in Franklin. Are you by chance also on AGF? I think I may have PM'd you once before.
Where do you buy the TI strings in our area?
Cheers,
Steve

I was just looking at Thomastik's website. They offer "tin-plated" steel plain strings. What is that all about? Anybody tried them? Benefit?

Why didn't you play the same song for both sets of strings? As it is, there's no way we can compare them.
