    Hello folks,

Anyone using one of these tiny power amps ?

Can you plug the guitar straight in
    (Without a preamp)
And get a good result ?

    Many thanks

I'm pretty sure it needs some sort of pre-amp in front of it.

I had a EHX Magnum 44 and it accepted instrument level, although it sounded fuller with line level. It was noisy and anemic, wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Given Mooer's reputation for cloning, I would suspect the Baby Bomb is not so different.

I've heard good things about the Seymour Duncan Power Stage line (but never tried them), and those are certainly designed for instrument level (and have an eq). But they cost a lot more.

I had one. A very loud beast for the size. Not noisy, contrary the EHX Cal. 22 which I also tried very early in my cab experiments. I wouldn't call the Mooer's sound refined, rather in-your-face, but I never tried it with a preamp. Mine went to a modeling amp guy to power his stage monitor. With the "rubber sole" under the Baby Bomb I could not figure out how it was meant to bet attached to a pedal board (or one of my cabs.)

I can not imagine any power amps sounding really good with out a preamp. (Watch the pedalshow episode about this, if you want to hear for yourself, and get an explanation as to why).

I though about buying the EHX 44, the moore baby bomb. I even made an offer for a moore on reverb. I am really glad that the offer was turned because, I ended up with SD Powerstage 700. Expensive but it sounded excellent.

I was able to find the unit used at a incredible price, but it had some strange noise after about an hour of use. It was such an incredible unit that I called the tech support. The tech person was friendly and told me everything he knew. He could not tell what the problem was. I decided after talking about it with him that I would be easier to just buy a new one.

Once I start running that rig again, I will happily buy another Powerstage 700 and even new. I was really impressed.

I am sure the others work well enough but they also seem a little expensive, (for what they are), so I would rather pay a little more and get something that is much better.

Preamps are necessary. There are a bunch of pedals that say preamp but are not real preamps. Price does not determine if it is a real preamp. For example, I have the (crazy) Chase Bliss “preamp” pedal. It cost a lot, sounds great, is a lot of fun, but is not a preamp.

I used a couple of different preamp pedals. Off the top of my head I can only remember the Clover … I can not even remember the name of the maker …. Even though I have at least a couple pedals from him. Matter of fact the pedal he did with boss is so cool. It is a fuzz and blues driver in one pedal with series and parallel mixing options. When I am front of my pedals, I am going to do a face palm.
