As far as how they sound, I Iike them equally. But single coil buzz can be a big problem in the places I play, so humbuckers are more practical.

For a floater I had Peter Biltoft of Vintage Vibe Pickups wind a Double Charlie Christian pickup. Doesn’t have all the extra baggage associated with the original.

This is the correct answer; if you have a guitar with one, then you also need a guitar with the other.

For my own playing (rather than other people's playing) I actually prefer the single coil sound and the P90 is just about perfect. The single coil buzz, on the other hand, drives me pretty well nuts. I like the P90, the DeArmond 1100, the Charlie Christian pickup sound, and even the single coil Telecaster and Stratocaster sounds. I've never played a guitar with the G&L P90-ish pickups, but I've always wondered about them. One of my very favorite pickups is the Bill 'n' Becky Lawrence Wilde L280.

With side-by-side humbuckers, there's a little bit of a phase cancellation that just bothers me- although this is sitting in my living room with no other sounds, so you're overly focused on that. When playing with a band I've never heard that at all, keeping up with the music is more than enough for my attention.

Gibson made a stacked humbucker version of the P90; was that the P-100? The P-92? I can't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up. i've never played one, but I suspect I'd like it a lot.

P100 is the P90 sized humbucker and the P92 is the Humbucker sized P90.

As AllenAllen said, the P100 is the hum
canceling version. The internet guitar commentariat mostly thinks they don’t sound like P90s. I’m not sure. I’ve heard this player and guitar in person quite a bit:

    I’d say there’s quite a bit of the P90 175 sound there (it’s an ES 135).

P92 is a Lindy Fralin version of the hb size P90.

P94 is the Gibson’s version of hb size P90. It was first.

I had once a guitar with P100s. They sounded and felt flat and un-dynamic, more like anemic. But I was comparing it to the P90s in a haste and didn’t investigate it as a possibly good pickup. Many like them too.

I like both but prefer the warmth and fatness of a Humbucker, not to mention the buzz free performance.

Humbuckers or P90s? Depends on the day.

I’ve been enjoying playing my Emperor II Pro on the split neck Humbucker position. It’s making me want another Emperor II and put some p94s in it.

Love them both! Glad I don’t have to choose. Having said that, it depends on the guitar, the player, etc.

That groove sank its claws in me right from the first beat. Great stuff, regardless of the pickup used ;-)
