I had the chance to study with Gene at a jazz camp for several years, which I jumped at since I love his approach to music and the guitar. He recorded his possibly last album- since he has retired and I think moved to a senior care facility- a year or two ago, "A Love Like ours" which is a collections of duets. I just started listening to this and wanted to share for those who might be interested.
I found Gene to be a warm, generous and wonderful person as well as being a marvelous and humble musician.

Beautiful, thoughtful music. Gene really shines in a duo setting.

Gene Bertoncini and Michael Moore -- a shining example of quiet power:

Gene is one of my all-time favorites. I wish him well.

My favorite current jazz guitarists (i.e., living) include Gene and Pete Bernstein; turns out Pete studied with Gene. Harmonically both straddle the span between classic and modern.
Raney and Abersold, great interview.
