I can’t recall if these guys have been referenced on forum before.

Both awesome players for sure. Yuji’s solo arrangements are awesome too, some amazingly fluid chord-melody work.

One of my favourite YT searches is Japanese Swing Guitar. Old Fashioned Music is a great channel. There are some awesome players and great videos. They all look to be enjoying their jazz so much, too!

You know that smiling is the standard reaction to almost everything in public, in Japan?

I watch all the Hirofumi Asaba duets. It’s clear he loves Barney Kessel.

Denis Chang featured Yuji a couple of times on his YouTube channel. IIRC, in one of the interviews Yuji mentions how he met Jonathan Stout and they discussed how to play this older style of jazz.

I get a pass on that. I never smile and only know how to say 'excuse me' and 'really?'
I don't even say it right. No one cares.

Right. Back to flat earth news about Ukraine and the middle east.

Might be the one thing about the Covid pandemic some of them miss: the facial masks they wore in public hid their real feelings, which you can be sure a polite smile would not express.

I care... the correct pronunciation is: "Well, Exkeeuuuuuse me!" a la Steve Martin on SNL.

It was me that used the word great - but in my defence I love this style of music and this does sound great to me - but then I'm not very good myself so most people sound great to me. I also don't care if somebody is better than someone else, I can still enjoy the players who aren't the greatest.

More to the point, these Japanese players aside (in terms of people playing this style nowadays) I'm only familiar with Jonathon Stout, Matt Munisteri, and Nick Rossi. I look forward to some more names to add to this list.

I quite like this young guy - Josh Dunn - I think he’s a student of Matt Munisteri but not sure

Generally speaking, Japanese jazz is more melodically driven. It's not trying to live up to western standards.
It's the music of peace not war.

So you know an American pre war style jazz player who sounds WAY better than they do? ESP but not only the chord guy?

Because I know players who sound as roughly as good, some listed above, but none far and away better.

    I think they NAIL IT.

    Maybe I’m wrong!

Sure, they're nailing the style, etc, but they're not GREAT. Which was Christian's word. Sorry, but I don't have to be gentle and spare their feelings, it's just a YouTube.

I assume the question was rhetorical. If one doesn't know "why" by now, one hasn't been paying attention.
