Anyone know where I can get the TAB for that piece? I have yet to weigh in on the How Fast Are You thread

For a contrasting skill, here is a piece that takes 639 years to perform: As Slow as Possible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've been working on that, Jake, but with the metronome at 2 & 4, I'm just about worn out patting my foot.

I don't get this stuff. The distortion is so overpowering that it's almost impossible to make out the notes. Why don't they just play it clean if it's an athletic thing?

It's easy to make fun of these shredders, but there's a long tradition in classical music of virtuosic encore pieces. The difference is that there pieces are musical:

Full disclosure: I've been watching quite a few Yuja Wang videos lately.

The 1400 BPM one was so funny........ I really think he might have meant it as a joke.

As far as sheer technical speed (with clarity and ease of phrasing), I'd have to say Yngwie in his prime (his first solo album in the mid 80's) is the fastest guitar player to date. It's definitely not my thing, but whether you're into that Neoclassical metal stuff or not, you have to give credit where credit is due. George Benson and Jimmy Bruno would give him a run for his money in the speed department though - and their bebop runs are a lot more difficult to play fast. And when it comes to blistering speed, you can't forget about Doyle Dykes - that guy is inhuman!

Benson is amazing, "It's uptown" is the only album I have but he is very fast - and also very melodic. I love his version of "A Foggy Day".

I love a good burner as much as anybody else, but you reach a certain speed and all dynamics go right out the window.
There are countless videos of shredders playing fast scales and arpeggios. Then you hear their compositions and there is usually no melodic development in the solos. If there is contrast it's usally fast vs super fast or slow pentatonics vs fast.

I used to be like that when I started out. I was around 16 then, blame the hormones.

Of course - I think someone said this - there are jazz guitarists like Benson who can probably go as fast as a shredder. It isn't always the case that if you play fast - you can't play slow. It is just that a lot of shredders want to always play fast to impress as many people as they can. I don't dislike shred though - I like Vai, Gilbert and Satriani they are definitely more than just playing fast - which makes me wonder if I should really classify them as shred - well what does it mean anyway? If it just means playing fast then Benson shreds too.
