Yes, he did. It was five years ago now, much to my surprise. It doesn't seem that long. If you have not seen the documentary about him called "Open Land," I recommend it. It was an interesting glimpse into the man. There are a number of good interviews with him on YouTube.
He was a very interesting musician throughout his career, although I think his last four or five albums are the ones that actually grab me the most.

There are some unreleased John Abercrombie and Mick Goodrick tracks on my YT channel below. A few more to come. A world-class synopsis of interplay. Just put your headphones on and close your eyes.....

His work with Ralph Towner is brilliant.

Why such a belated acknowledgement?

Sorry. I saw an old thread somewhere and didn't look at the date. I missed it.

I also did not know this. I was in my car yesterday, and the Jazz channel on SiriusXM was playing him. I thought to myself, I almost forgot about him and how much I liked him. Whatever happened to him? Thanks for the update. I hadn't gotten around to the investigation and perhaps it would have slipped my mind entirely.

He had plans to get stronger and finish the tour but he never recovered.
Late summer I got word he'd passed. It was a hard hit for both of us.
There was an auction of his instruments. I wish I'd had the money to buy his L-1.
His sound will always be distinctly his own.

Life on the road is not good for most everyone. Bad diet, tedious travel, uncertain sleep, probably too much smoking and drinking, separation from loved ones... and uncertain income, too. Being a professional musician is a hard life (as many of you here know).
John's thoughtfulness seems very evident in "Open Land" and I recommend it.

I'm such a fan. Especially Timeless, and his duo work with Ralph Towner. I carried an album jacket to a show in LA and after the show, they let me hang and I asked him to autograph it. One of my most prized possessions.
For the record, John was extremely cordial and chatted with my wife and I for a couple minutes. I'll never forget it.

I saw John with pianist Marc Copland here in the UK in November 2016 (at the Watermill in Dorking), I guess it must have been one of his last gigs. He did seem very tired and didn’t really get going until the last few tunes.
Prior to that I saw him at Ronnie Scotts in 1999 with Dan Wall and Adam Nussbaum, that was brilliant.
Here’s a photo from the 2016 gig taken by my friend Brian O’Connor. I remember John said to the audience at one point ‘You’ve got to be crazy to play this music!’
