I comp for a good clarinet player. We had some reasonable success at a recent home concert so we want to learn some new tunes. Any suggestions for songs that might work well for us? I'm open to suggestions, he seems to like songs from the 20's to the 70's.

    Thanks in advance, RG

Mort Weiss did a CD with Ron Eschete. I can't say that Weiss is my favorite clarinetist, although Eschete's solo CD is one of my all-time inspirations. Their duo CD has a good set list, and terrific comping by Eschete. All just IMHO, of course.

This is a great album. Clarinet is not my favourite instrument - quite the opposite in fact - but Barnesy is a great player whichever horn he picks up, and Martin is on the kind of form that justifies his "Guv'nor" nickname.

Would have loved to have been there for these sessions - bet it was a laugh-a-minute, as well as being musically fantastic.

I just listened to a number of tracks from a Sextet featuring Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian today on the way home. In terms of a clarinet/guitar combo you would be pressed to find a better pair or sextet in this case. Stardust, Soft winds, I'm confessin, and These Foolish Things are a few of my favorites from the album. All of the tracks are what you are looking for in my opinion.

    Also check out:

Artie Shaw is another of my favorites with Cant get started with you, The man I love.

    Dave Brubeck with Tangerine

I particularly like that combo myself. Just noticed you were looking for duets. Oops. Check them out anyway.

I have the Charlie Christian CD's that Frethack mentioned. I recommend all of those +Honeysuckle Rose , Wholly Cats and all Star Strut. Great guitar and clarinet.

Check out Lenny Breau "The Living Room Tapes," quite a bit of which is guitar and clarinet.

Awesome, thanks everyone. I'll forward these suggestions and any future ones, except Diver Down which I own BTW, to the clarinet player.

Aw, what's wrong with Big Bad Bill? Tasteful clarinet and it's actually an older tune.

Michelle, Mighty Lak A Rose, My Funny Valentine may work really well. Lovely combination, clarinet and guitar. I would go for strong, throaty vocal- centric songs as well as the swinging stuff. May try Salute To Charlie Christian by Kessel.

Thanks all, I just sent the clarinet player your ideas and a link to this thread. Will advise what we pick.

I didn't even play the video because I though you were making a joke. Now that I've listened to the song, I added it to our list of possibilities.

There were a few clarinet/guitar duo records.
Don Burrows made one with George Golla.
Eddie Daniels made one with Chuck Loeb.
Bucky Pizzarelli probably made one with some clarinet player...

Jobim melodies sound brilliant on clarinet. Check out Phil Woods

Brad Terry does a nice version of Blue in Green here (go to 3:40).

Best clarinet/guitar duet ever, in my opinion - Lenny Breau and Brad Terry, Autumn Leaves. This will knock you out, I promise:
