Here are a list of 41 bop heads some of which I know well, some of which I know... less well... and a couple of which I am basically at square one with...
The idea is to make it up to 50 bop heads, but I wouldn't mind some suggestions on the other 9 - I'm sure I've missed some obvious ones. I probably wouldn't really include anything from the Tristano school, as I kind of see that stuff as a separate language, and wouldn't include any of the John Coltrane stuff like 26-2 for the same reason... (Although I'm probably pushing it a bit with Tenor Madness, Airmail, Along Came Betty and Tickletoe, YMMV...)
Also the list might prove useful to other learners...

Ted Dunbar had a list of bebop heads he had his students learn. He felt each one provided a unique technical challenge for the guitarist.
David Baker also had a list of essential bebop heads in one of his books.
I combined them into one chart.

Tadd Dameron's 'Our Delight' is a nice tune, not mentioned so far I think.
-
An interesting one by a guitarist is Barney Kessel's 'Vicky's Dream' - sounds like he composed it when he was going through a Tristano-ite phase! (spot the contrafact!)

I was going to suggest "Bird Feathers". Just one of my favourites.
Reading this thread has reminded me what a rich seam pure Bebop is.
Tell you what though, you'll really be an expert when you can list all the alternate titles that some of these tunes were known by. (For dubious copyright/royalty reasons).
"Bebop in Pastel" anyone ?

There's a few listed here that I forgot I learned. I think 50 might be very achievable in the next few weeks.
Hmm... can we make the list to 100? :-)Last edited by christianm77; 03-20-2016 at 03:12 PM.

There should be more Dameron-Navarro tunes. How about Barry's Bop, or Tadd Walk, or Eb-Pob?

Ezz-thetic by George Russell.
(Do you know I had to type that about six times before my iPad would stop auto-correcting it to something else!)
-
Ladybird by Tadd Dameron.
-
There are a few above that I wouldn't consider bebop, but there's no hard and fast criteria.
Anyway, three others that I think fall clearly into the idiom:
Bouncin With Bud
Crazeology
Sixteen
-
Also, Freight Trane (Bird blues in Ab).
-
Lazy Bird - Pat Martino has a version but Coltrane, I believe, composed it
My favorite BeBop tune.Last edited by AlsoRan; 03-21-2016 at 08:02 AM.
