Maj9/m9/9 chord inversions

Hey guys,

I'm familiar with maj9/m9/9 chords with the root in the bass but I'm trying to figure out the best way to invert them. If anyone could point in the direction to some chord charts that would be awesome.

The simplest thing that comes to mind is to drop the root (leave it for the bass player) and work with the remaining chord:

CMaj9 -> Em7
Cm9 -> EbMaj7
C9 -> Em7b5

Sometimes, you can take a resulting chord and stick the C back in:

Em7: x7x787 -> CMaj9/E x7.10.7.8.7

I'm assuming you want 4 note voicings because if its 5 there would be way too many drop voicings for each inversion (23 of them plus closed). And don't get me started on 6 note voicings of which there are 120 of them for each inversion...

Anywho personally I like ordering the pitches from lowest to highest so instead of 1357/1379 its 1237. Gives me more consistency with organizing other chords

So for 4 Note Voicings you might possibly have

then finding the root chord (which may not have the root in it--CMA9--3579) and the three inversions on each set of strings (12 chords total)

Ah ok so the way that ive seen people do this most often is to take the pitch set you play on the guitar, say

C E B D’

and permutate it like this, moving each note up to the next note in the pitch set in turn
C E B D’
D B C’ E’
E C D’ B’
B D’ E’ C’’

can get strettttrrrchy

it’s cos you have a leap of a fifth from the E to the B. It’s a weird one (as the pitch set doesn’t contain G) but they are all the same voicing type inverted….
