    One of haiku’s defining characteristics is its concise structure. If a poem doesn’t follow this structure, it’s not a haiku—at least in the traditional sense.

    In English, the structure is:
    Line 1: Five syllables
    Line 2: Seven syllables
    Line 3: Five syllables

    A haiku often features an image, or a pair of images, meant to depict the essence of a specific moment in time.
